OK MAN!!!!!!
I would like to take Judo because it seems effective in close quarters. Plus I love those lock and takedown moves.

Depends. Judo does a lot of, throws, take downs, etc. And, Shotokan etc have alot of wrist locks etc. which are REAL good in small areas/

Basically I want to take something where I can use it in a small space to get the opponent on the ground in a lock. Then I can mock them and irritate them and they can't do anything about it.

No. Don't do that dude. Give them enough pain to make them stop. Then walk away. DO NOT irritate them, if they are stupid, they might get mad and come at you again.

I'm just kidding, FYI.
What kind of moron continues to fight when he or she has already been beaten and clearly cannot win? Getting emotional in a fight is the last thing you want to do. It puts you at a huge disadvantage.

I'm about to start training a freestyle form of martial arts that combines kickboxing with karate and amongst other forms. My friend invited me to his dojo. The reason I decided to go is because he informed me of how violent it is, which is what I need.
I trained in martial arts from when I was 7 years old until I was almost 18. I only stopped because I broke my hand (on someone's face) and then did not re-start again due to schooling requirements.
I trained in judo for about 3 years - from age 7 to almost 10.
In taekwondo for 2 years - got my black belt, but didn't like it. I don't recommend this style. I was 12 when I quit that and changed style.
I then did Wing Chun Kung Fu for five years, and for the last two did KickBoxing at the same time.
Throughout my pretigious career [lol] I have done a lot of weapons (Boken, Kali, Chinese Broad Sword, Nanchuku being amongst them.)
And attended Jujitsu and San Shou seminars.
I also fought in a lot of tournaments, and did very well in these.

Since you've taken Taekwondo can you please tell me why it is so damn popular? I mean, everyone and their brother seems to take it. There are other styles out there people!

Its easy & takes only two years to get a blackbelt, etcetera. Maybe thats why? But -
Taekwondo is silly.
Reasons it sucks: All the moves, especially kicks, are designed at getting POINTS in semicontact competition fighting. Not for killing people. The emphasis is on kicking really high. This is ineffective because you lose power & control, & expose yourself & put yourself off balance. The kicking in kung fu contrasts to this because the emphasis is on absolute power. The lower you kick the more power you get. In a fight I would only kick to the thigh with roundhouse kick, & chop the [censored] down, or to the stomach/sternum with a front, side or spinning side kick.
roundhousing to the head or chest is dumb, especially if they block your foot with their elbow.
