has anybody else noticed that android 17 has a gun on his belt?what does he need that for?

yes he does. i cant remember if it was present or future 17 that had it. he has it on a game i have.

For simple cool effect maybe? A lotta things in DBZ seemed to be random:

Zarbons earrings
17's green socks (gotta love them socks )

he does have a gun,you can see it on DBZ budokai games(try using Piccolo's hellzone grenade on 17,then you will see the gun)
