He can read fine but he's not so skilled at writing. Because in the episode he appears, he is trying to write a letter to the daimyo, but can't so he hands it over to Renkotsu. When Renkotsu is finished writing, he looks over the paper as if he is reading it. So I think he can read just not write and we know he can count to at least a thousand because he counted the daimyo as the 1,000th person he slayed.

I'm sorry if I correct people and ruin their fun. But I do have to agree. Bankotsu is so very fine. I was drooling over last night's episode. Naked flashbacks are the best...^_~
