what does chan,kun,and sama mean and why do they say it

*rings a bell* All aboard the Honorifics Train!

-chan = a cutesy way of calling someone after their name, like "Eiko-chan". It's a sort of babish way to express one's affection for another. Or just to tease on some occasions, but it acts like "-san", but on a closer and personal level.

-kun = this is more for usage on boys, although in this day of age, the girls are starting to be called "-kun" as well. Again, it acts like "-san". Doesn't actually mean much since it could be used to replace the "-san" in the first place. It's still rather polite (but not on the first meeting).

-sama = this is resevered for the higher ups, royalty, people of higher rank...you get the picture. It's just putting someone much higher than you is all, but you're still calling them "Mr/Ms/Mrs".

The reason for say them is because it seems proper. Calling one by their names only with no honorifics is, I think, considered a bit rude.

Darn it...芸者男の子-san gave a better explainations on the honorifics but I can't find it right now...

-dono refers to a person that should be respected but, unlike -sama, doesn't carry the typical undertones of affection. In other words it would be used for a person that you respect as a matter of course rather than out of personal preference.

-dono is an old honorific that isn't used in normal conversation in modern Japanese though. It's mainly encountered in anime such as Tenchi Muyo! and Bleach.
