What do each of you think is the best anime overall that you've seen? Why?

I'd say Gilgamesh.
Why? Because it has the right amount of action, but a thick enough plot to keep you interested in the story and not just because of the fight scenes.
I like the character's, each one is unique and they don't seem to resemble ones that I've seen in other animes.
Plus I like the style of animation in it.

Fullmetal Alchemist! Definatly!
because its just about the only anime i have seen that can you laughing one minit, then instantly have you crying or freaking out the next. So many lovable charaters with well developed personalities. Arakawa-sensei did a wounderful job developing the alchemy theme with the anime! =^-^=

Mobile Suit Gundam. It set the standard for mecha anime, and was one of the first shows to break the preconception that anime is just for kids. In a sense, it was ahead of its time, since it did not gain popularity, until several years after it was initially cancelled. And without First Gundam, there would not be any other Gundam anime, no Wing, no X, no Seed, etc...

Gundam Seed Destiny
Because well I love mecha and I love to see Gundams fight and in this series they are not short of gundam fights pluys the animation is more modern then the older gundams and i like new animation this doesn't mean i hate the old gundams though those are still cool

I like Zengar's responce, I find myself torn. I would be very hard pressed to choose between Mobile Suit Gundam for the same reasons Zengar has said, then there's Legend of Galactic Heroes. A series that shows a lot of depth and details about war, politics and philosophy. I like a lot of sci-fi, but if Gundam is to Japan what Star Trek is to America. Then Legend of Galactic Heroes is like the Babylon 5 of anime! That pretty much says it all for me.

The best one I've seen so far is Fullmetal Alchemist. It's funny and sad (I like that combination) and it's the only anime that my parents actually watched and actually liked. Oh, and it makes me think a lot about the whole humanity thingy.

Flame of Recca. Probably because it was the first anime I ever saw, but it was also a great story with great characters.

I think you have just asked a truely unanswerable question. I mean I have set trying to think of one, but everytime I'd pick one another would pop into my mind. I beleive with anime there is always great ones being made somewhere, so there is no truely one overall great anime. Personal tastes will always rule as well, like I think Naruto is total crap because of all the simple minded fanboys that worship that one anime and nothing else. Others love it...
I really enjoyed The Hakkenden: The Legend of the Dog Warriors because of a deep story, lovely animation, great chars, a deeper sence of realism and others might not like it...
