You know, I wasn't sure what was going on until the almost the end.. then it all made a ton of sense.. Enough to buy the entire series. It's on loan but I need to watch it again! Love it. I have noticed an increase in charaters having 'southern' accents. I wonder why?

They give Osaka a southern accent in Azumanga Daioh. She like Sasshi and Arumi are from a region of Japan that has a different accent than the rest of the nation. So I guess they thought it would translate as well, like southerners have a different accent from the rest of the U.S.

As good an answer as any, I suppose. Works for me. Southern Japan, eh? Sure. Many Thanks.

First of all, concerning the accent...the Kansai accent is much different from the typical Tokyo accent. ADV decided to use a different accent to differentiate the Kansai accent from typical Japanese most Western otaku know about. And since ADV is located in Houston, Texas...the Houston accent is conveniently located in the vicinity of their recording studios.
Thus, the spoken Kansai accent will be 'Southern' for ADV.
As for the written accent...as those liner notes for MSA Abenobashi point out, Osaka natives match New Yorkers in temperament...so in writing from ADV, translated Osaka accent gains that Bronx accent heard so frequently on network TV.
As for MSA Abenobashi...I found it funny--at first.
But when Sasshi didn't tell the whiny Arumi the truth about her father...it told me that Gainax was going to drag out the series for one of their patented "epic saga" endings once again.
That ruined it for me.--Well, that, and having Arumi as a shrew that never got comeuppance except in the "outtakes". It coulda, shoulda, and probably woulda...if it hadn't been a Gainax series.
Man, do I hate those idiots at Gainax!
