Yes, I haven't watched Pokemon in ages but he tends to leave most of his old Pokemon every time he goes to a new region. I can't remember all of them and I'm a tad lazy to list >_> He does meet up with those other Pokemon once but I can't remember XD I tried...

The pokemon left behind are the ones who are too traumatized to go on after the nightly fornication.

Ash has left the following pokemon with Prof. Oak:
Bulbasaur, Bayleef, Cyndaquil, Noctowl, Heracross, Muk, Kingler, Tauros, and Totodile, Gaile (the evoled form of Snorunt), Torkoal...
He's released, but can call on anytime:
Charizard (why he did that I'll never understand and he ran off crying when he did), Butterfree, Primape (he didnt cry when primape left)Beedrill (he gave it to Cassie, the Electabuzz fangirl) Pidgeot, um...and I can't remember the others.
Right now he's got Pikachu, Donphan, Grovile/Sceptile, Swellow, Corphish and soon he's gonna get an Aipom.

Nope. Nobody from season one has made an appearance since...well..season one. the only exception would be Charizard.
After ten years, I totally agree with you. Ash has diminished and the new voice acting didn't help.
Not only does he give away all his good pokemon but he cant seem to remember that he already KNOWS all the pokemon he sees on his new journey. He doesn't even need a pokedex half the time anymore. And he doesn't battle as well as he did at the Silver Conference and before that. Its like his brain up and left him. -_- and to add insult to injury he
starts to act a lot like Misty did towards that new girl Hikari. He's become a minor character in his own show. He acts like one too.
But worst of all has to be that he doesn't even talk about wanting to be a Pokemon Master anymore. I think he just doesn't want to go home anymore.
And the only reason he goes to the new region is to follow Gary AGAIN!! THAT is why there is so much support for Palletshipping and I think the animators know that, since the relationship between Ash and Gary is the only this emphasized in the entire series besides trainer and pokemon.
hmm...am I saying too much?

i dont even know what happened to his pigeotto.
Satochu your wrong about ash in some areas. the ash in the battle foanir is WAAY smarter than the ash wht fist started the show. fact of the matter is he can't get far without using his head after advance battle. second i haven't even heard of gary for several seasons correct if i'm wrong.
i DO agree that his role has somewhat diminished since may came along. (it's kinda spooky how those two act so much alike sometimes) as far as hi becoming a pokemon master goes i think he's still try for it.
and also take note that ash doesn't use his pokedex on those older pokemon it's normally may who uses it. and to top that off the pokedex info from the first seasons and the latest season can be different so it's ok for ash to check it out.
