It's not just the beam weapons, it's the Eva's lack of an onboard powerplant which limits it's operational range. In fact it's battery life is worse than those of the Gundam Seed's mobile suits, Eva 5 minutes on batteries.

Now I know some Eva fans that will insist that an Eva's AT field can stop beam weapons, but I seem to remember a episode where the AT field shows no ability to effect a beam weapon. The Beam went right thought the AT field and showed no signs of the AT field takeing the hit.

However just to be sure, I'd want to use the Gundam F91 to take down an Eva, The Variable Speed Beam Rifles were made for penetrating hits and knocking down beam shields and force fields. It might even be able to go right through the phase shift armor on the Strike.

Plus the Gundam F91 is a smaller target able to make better use of cover than most larger mobile suits and especially an Eva.

I'm suprised no Eva fans have come in here to defend it. Then again I don't know too many people that are fans of both Eva and Gundam. It seems the 2 don't get along very well.

If you put this question out in the general anime thread you might get a firestorm of an argument.

I'm more of an Eva fan. So I don't care how it does it, hopefully it'll beat a Gundam's ass in a battle.

Beam weapons don't mean that much, what matters is the power of the beam itself. I doubt that a beam rifle will have sufficient energy to stop an Eva's AT Field. the crystalline angel did use a beam weapon to burn through an Eva's AT field, but that Angel was grossly overpowered, (its AT field was so powerful it required japan to have a nation wide blackout in order to route the power of the nation into an experimental sniper beam weapon. i think the only way a gundam, GM, Zaku, Ginn, etc would win is by severing the umbilical cord, but this would not work on Eva 01 because of its S2 engine which provides it with unlimited power.
Edit: I'm sure a beam weapon would not penetrate the AT Field, I just rewatched a few EVA episodes, and Misato said that the EVA's AT Field could withstand a nuclear explosion, and in another episode, the EVA 00 did a suicide attack on an angel with a N2 nuclear mine, and survived completely intact (although the angel dismembered the EVA afterwards)

*looks at topic*..... Gundams would win. There is no competition. It would be more of a slaughter than a fight.

Ok first its called a Beam Riffle in the first place, so stop calling it a beam weapon. Second there are also other weapons that uses a high output beam and energy caps. [ I am refering to U.C.] A beam riffle is use to peirce, thats the only thing, if it hits the same spot over and over the field would weaken. Also there is such a thing as a beam machine gun, that has a spray efect and would drain the shields in five minutes or less. Also there is a beam bazooka, this is much more powerful and can distroy your shields and your eva instantly. Also a beam spray gun. Gundams are not limited to beam weapons, as an example of a bazooka or hyper, and the funnels. Watch chars counter attack, that would drain any doubt of Eva fans.

The crystalline angel used a beam weapon that burned through the Eva's AT field, but as you say if that angel was grossly overpowered. The particle beam the Eva sniped it with shows no signs of striking an AT field, it just passes through the crystalline angel in an overkill like manner.

And Eva 01 doesn't have an S2 nuclear powerplant at first, it eats one, give me a break. Let's also consider the ranges of the weapons. The Eva sniped the crystalline angel from a range of 2km and missed the first shot. In the 08th MS Team we've seen Sanders snipe a Zaku from 10 klicks or about 8 to 10 miles, he missed the first shot too but it shows superior weapon technologies.

Yeah, but dont forget the GM Sniper unit is limited, it has to have a power supply short for it, I.E. the truck that followed it around.

Sanders didn't have a GM sniper, he was in his Gundam RX-79[G] useing the standard beam rifle on those Zakus. I would think the GM sniper's beam long gun has an even greater range than the 10 clicks Sanders was firing from.

Wow, I remember this thread from a while back. It appears we have a necromancer in our midst Anyways, on retrospect, most of the prototype Gundam units past UC 0093 can most likely smoke an Eva. And from the Alternate universes, I know that the Gundam X (and its variants) along with the Turn A and the Turn Xs would be able to trash an Eva fairly easily.

And Juno, I have seen every Gundam anime to date (save for IGLOO and Victory), and I'm not an Eva fan, I absolutely hate the show. I was just trying to observe the comparisons between the two mechs objectively. One of the things that drove me to my original conclusion is the comparison of the Evangelion units with Gundam units in the Playstation 2 Game Super Robot Wars Alpha. Between the two, I found that none of the mobile suit's beam pistols, rifles, and machineguns would even damage the Eva, save for the Dendrobium's Heavy Beam Gun. However, this comparison only included mobile suits from 0083 up to 0093, and I can say that judging from the status ratings, I'd say that the 0093+ Units would be able to defeat Evas (Though none of the Nu and the Mass Production Nu Gundam's regular weapons would work, their Funnel attacks could do significant damage upon Evas, so considering the technological advances between 0093 and 0123, I'd imagine that Mecha from 0093+ would be able to do significant damage upon Evas.
