Yes, the "yasha" is, at times, "female demon", but Rumiko Takahashi aimed for it to just mean "demon".

i have heard in a number of different places that his name literally means Dog demon of the forest. but then again, who knows. Sesshoumaru has like two different spellings and a thousand meanings. LOL. you never know.
even Youkai doesn't have a direct definition, because the english language doesnt' quite accomodate for the translation. we take it as Demon...but it's more of a spirit. ...go figure.

No one meant it to mean "female demon", but simply demon. That is his real name I assure you.

Sesshoumaru's name means 'ring of death' or of the sort. I can read his kanji name especially InuYasha's. But the only spelling for Sesshoumaru is 'Sesshoumaru' and nothing else.
'Youkai' is 'demon' in the
InuYasha series sense. It's also 'specter', 'monster', 'ghost' and whatnot, but they pretty much relate to each other.

Youkai just meant for it to mean 'Dog Demon', very simple. Lol.

The kanji of "Sessho" means "killing or destruction of life." "Maru" is usually a suffix that is often added at the end of a Japanese name for young males in samurai families. They would use this name until they were recognized as adults, whereupon they would adopt a new name. Therefore Sesshomaru means "Destruction Man."

That's intersesting. I'd think Sesshomaru's name would end in something that has to do with a demon. 'Destruction Demon' seems more efficent.

Correction- "Inu" means dog and "Yasha" can mean demonic warrior, warrior or female demon. In the manga there is a slight reference to it and they talk of the demonic warrior meaning.
