It's in this order.
Tenchi Muyo!
Tenchi Universe!
Tenchi in Tokyo!
and lastly...
Tenchi GXP
There you go!

Which series follow each other. It is to my understanding the OVA has a different storyline to Universe.

Absolutly correct! If we were following the OVA reality, it would be:
Episodes 1-6
Galaxy Police Mihoshi Special
Episodes 7-19 (I'm adding the third OVA)
Tenchi Muyo! GXP
Personally, I don't know where the movie "Daughter of Darkness" would be, although it is OVA based, but with Kiyone in it.

I think I read somewhere that Daughter of Darkness was a TV special originally - I could be wrong. Strangely enough it also happens to be my least favorite Tenchi movie.
The other two - Tenchi In Love and Tenchi Forever - are terrific IMO.
