SFW Essay

I had to write an essay for my Nursing 300 class on perception of nurses in the modern day. I decided to write it on porn. It's totally safe for work. (Other than, of course, dissecting porn.)

Pornography is everywhere. It is a universal fact that people will never stop having sex, and that people will pay to see other people having sex. I’m not here today to talk about how evil pornography is, or how good it is. I’m here today to talk about nurses and their role in one of the biggest parts of the entertainment industry. As I mentioned above, I took four websites that feature pornography exclusivelly and compared the results for “nurse”, “doctor”, and “physical therapist”. Let’s examine the results, shall we?

The first website I looked at was redtube.com. Typing “nurse” into the search bar, I began to count. In the end, there were 80 pornographic clips or films featuring nurses. Redtube.com was the only website I visited that had a male nurse as the “star”, such as it is. According to Chitty and Black , on page 45 in their book Professional Nursing- Concepts and Challenges, males make up only 5.4% of the number of total registered nurses in the United States. As students and professional nurses alike, we see that there are very few men in the workforce, and the men tend to work management, not directly with the patients. And the pornography industry certainly represents that right if nothing else. In no other place did I find evidence of a male nurse. However, there was a significant increase in male “stars” when I typed “doctor” into the search bar. 66 pornographies featured the heading “doctor”, and 46 “starred” a doctor. The doctors were around equal for both genders, which represents the workforce quite nicely. The number of women as doctors has come to equal, more or less, the number of men as doctors while in nursing there is a large discrepancy. The number of physical therapists in pornography was 0, which I will discuss later.

The next website I visited was youporn.com. When I typed “nurse” into the search bar, I was greeted with more nurses performing sexual acts on their patients, the doctor, and each other than before. In total, there were 154 pornographic clips or films featuring nurses. This number is actually on the low end, as there were several repeats. When I searched “doctor” I found only 112 for the “good” doctor, 8 of which featured the same nurses from above, and 3 of which featured someone playing doctor. It seems nurses are the more popular of the two. And once again, there were 0 results for physical therapists.

My next website, spankwire.com, offered me something different I gladly took advantage of- the option of gay or straight pornography. When I searched “nurse” under the straight section, I got a staggering 217 results, with 2 results having their leading ladies modelling nurse costumes. When I looked at the gay results, I only found 6 for nurse. That isn’t unusual- there isn’t much gay pornography out there. However, when I searched “doctor”, the number I received astounded me. There were 70 results under gay pornography for doctor- that’s nearly 12 times as much as nurse. For the straight pornography, there was 1 result for playing doctor. Once again, the male rules supreme in the medical field while withering quietly away in nursing. Once again, there was no results for physical therapist.

My fourth and final website was pornhub.com. The results for “nurse” were a meager 29, with one lady modelling her costume for the camera. For doctor however, we find 138 results with 8, once again, featuring the nurses up there and 1 playing doctor. In one thumbnail, a person was spotted wearing scrubs, so we might have found 1 elusive physical therapist appearing in a pornography. Otherwise, there were 0 results for physical therapist.

What makes the nurse so attractive, that she- and she is almost exclusively a she- is seen repeatedly in pornography? Most real nurses are annoyed by this trend, because the kind of behavior displayed would be considered extremely inappropriate and in violation of the professional relationship nurses and patients share (Chitty and Black, page 214). One of the things I noticed was a recurring theme was the nurse’s white dress with a red cross on the breast, if it was able to be seen, and white hat. There was only one pornographic clip or film that featured anyone in scrubs at all under the search label “nurse”. Yet, nurses are at their most comfortable in scrub pants and tops and have been resistent to change (Chitty and Black). The white hat and dress have largely disappeared from nursing. Nursing schools and older nurses may have kept their distinctive caps, but the nursing caps seen on the nurses in these videos are generic and made up by costume makers. The dresses too, are generic and made up by costume designers as part of the “naughty” nurse costumes that are popular. The doctors seen in the various pornographic videos are wearing a wide variety of outfits, which is true to life. However, the doctors were merely a comparision and thusly do not warrant our attention inthis paper. The fact that there is only one male nurse in 461 different pornographic films or clips warrants our attention. As pointed out previously, the current percentage of men in the nursing workforce is 5.4%, yet only 0.002% of a reletively small sample of pornographic nurses is male. This is a stark contrast when compared to varied ethinicity of pornographic nurses. In real life, the percentage of white nurses is 88.4%, with minorities filling the remaining 11.6% (Chitty and Black, page 4). I don’t have data on the minorities of pornographic nurses, but it is much more even. Where pornography does one minority injustice, it does another justice.

In the end, pornography is a way for bored and lonely men and women to amuse themselves, and the nurse is one more outlet. As professional nurses however, I think we need to take a stand and stop the portrail of nurses the way that they are in pornography.

I dunno. My teacher didn't really give us much direction in that regard. It's supposed to be a APA format one, so it should be in third person technically, I think.

Ah, well in that case I'd make it formal, just to be on the safe side. Solid writing though, Nyxie my dear!

I thought it was hilarious, yet wonderfully educating at the same time.
Depending on your personal view on pornography, I think it would either have been a really fun paper to research, or a really stupid nasty one to research XD. Out of curiosity, how long did it take you to gather all the statistics for this paper?

AS for it needing to be moved, gg is very right. Its not hyper-linked so it is all good. I think the header on the post sorta helps with that, letting the readers know what is going to be in the essay before reading.
`course, that's merely my opinion. we can work on it if you actually think it needs to be changed XD

Surprisingly, it got boring after a while, esp. since I don't have a nurse fetish and it took me...hour or so? I went to the sites I listed and typed in nurse, doctor and physical therapist then counted the numbers, subtracting the repeats and the ones that otherwise didn't fit. I felt so awkward when my roommates would come in and I'd be looking at porn titles because there would be a bunch of pages I had to go thru. Best part of it tho? Porn title: Beautiful black nurse gets 40 cc of [guess what?] up her [guess where]. I rofled so hard.

19/20 for "focusing too much on the subject material". Not my fault she gave us a 2 page max.
