Trying to find an Anime

a friend told me about an anime but cant remember the name. Its about a boy who pilots a white mech and was captured because he was sick. They took care of him then hung him outside the ship in a cage. He likes crystals and stuff and digs tunnels through the ship to find them. It also has elves and he is a really good worker so everyone likes him.
