I just started watching the series can someone tell me why edward has a metal arm and what happened to his brother?

they tried to bring back there mother using alcemy....but thats forbiden to use it for bringing back dead and no one ever did it right before..so they studyed and studyed untill finaly they tried it but something went wrong in process and his brother was being sacrifeced and to save him edward offered his arm and leg as tribute for binding his brothers soul to metal armor suit...they then join state alcemist in hopes of finding a way to turn his brother back...his friends in town make special robotic arms and legs and things and so they made edward new arm and leg........and now u know...lol

for bindind Al's soul to the armer didn't he just use his arm
but his leg was broken down by the force of alchemy just like how Al was?
i watched that part over and over in my DVD i think thats what happened about his arm and leg

One thing I don't understand: Why do people always want to know things before-hand???

The reason is explained early in the anime (3rd/4th ep, i think), so just watch it, you'll get all the answers...
Don't try to know everything early, IT WILL RUIN your viewing experience.

Okay.The reason I wanted to know is because I got a bit confused as to why Ed had a metal arm and leg and why his brother was in a armored suit.

eric just explained it. they were trying to do alchemy. al's body got taken so ed attached his soul to the armor. ed used his arm and leg as sacrifice for al's soul. get it?
