Last Exile - one viewer's review

Last Exile – Wow. On my scale of one to ten, a ten*. It’s a universe where Steam Punk meets Mecha and it works. The “van-ships” are a cross between 1930’s automobiles and open cockpit WWI fighter planes. The airborne warships are huge and employ early 19th century naval tactics in ship-to-ship battles. Even though the technology is pure fantasy, Last Exile captures the spirit of early aviation and is a must see for anyone interested in flying. It's slightly moody Art Deco look is stunning. I really don’t like most computer-generated animation but Gonzo has done a lovely job of blending the CG with hand drawn animation. I'm anxiously awaiting the final disc and so far the battle scenes haven’t been particularly bloody nor has there been any sign of sex or romance. It’s good family fair that won’t bore the hard-core anime fan. Oh, yeah. The sound track is awesome too.
*10 = Visuals are true works of art and the story and characters spark the imagination between episodes; a classic to be watched again and again. A series I will buy.
