Anime Profile: Macross Plus

This can basically be described as an animated Top Gun with a twist. It takes place 30 years after the first Robotech War, starting off as a contest between two prototype Valkyerie fighters. The reason these are prototype fighters is that they can fold by themselves.

Enter Isamu, a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants-pilot who is ordered to be one of the test pilots. He encounters his old rival Gauld Bowman, a half Zentraedi who has problems controlling his warrior instincts. The two start off the competition almost at each others throats.

Enter Miyune, a former singer and producer of the famous singer Sharon Apple. Sharon is a computer made image using emotions downloaded from Miyune's mind. Miyune is an old friend of Isamu and Gauld. However, their feelings toward each other are left to be questioned.

During the competition, U.N. Spacy has developed a new fighter, the Ghost X-9. This fighter is pilot free; it can fly and attack by itself. Also, one of the Sharon programmers upgrades Sharon with an AI chip, which gives Sharon self-awareness. After the production of the Ghost X-9, the fighter competition is cancelled. Sharon makes a surprising concert on Earth. Isamu races towards Earth with Gauld in pursuit.

Miyune knows the truth about Sharon and tries to stop her. She also discovered that Sharon has an obsession with Isamu. Both Isamu and Gauld know whats going on, so they place their differences aside, and try to stop Sharon. Meanwhile, Sharon is taking control of all the people that listen to her and possessing anything that is run by computer, INCLUDING MACROSS.

Gauld died by going on a collision coarse with the Ghost X-9. Isamu destroyed the Macross main computer system that was linked up to Sharon. Without power, Sharon died.

Macross Plus takes place 30 years after the events of Space War I in the original Macross, and takes us to the colonized planet of Eden in the year 2040 A.D.

Hotshot Valkyrie pilot Isamu Dyson is sent to Eden in order to test the new Valkyries in development. However, he is reunited with his childhood rival Guld Goa Boaman and his mutual friend Myung Fang Lone. Guld himself is also a test pilot for the second Valkyrie in development and only intensifies the rivalry between them, transforming into a bitter and dangerous conflict. Myung herself is in charge of the famous Virtual Pop Idol Sharon Apple, though she has grown despondent of her work.

The strained relationship of these three friends come to a head, and old disputes and wounds are reopened in the process. However, things get even worse when an illegal chip is put into Sharon Apple's AI, giving her self-consciousness. Spiraling out of control, she threatens to completely take over the minds of everyone! Can the three friends patch up their relationship and shut down Sharon Apple in the process?
