DVD Review: DVD Review: Spike & Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation: Caught in the Act
Spike & Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation: Caught in the Act is a collection of about twenty different animated shorts compiled onto one DVD for your twisted enjoyment. Each short is unique, made by a different group of people with completely different artistic and animation styles. Entertainment-wise, it's a mixed bag that ranges from hilarious to pointless. As the title indicates, many of the shorts are sick and twisted, at times even out-grossing cartoons such as South Park, Itchy & Scratchy, and Ren & Stimpy.
It's hard to really summarize this DVD, as most of the shorts don't really have plots. They're just there for a quick laugh. For example, I'll attempt to summarize what is by far the best short in the bunch, Here Comes Dr. Tran. As you read it, you'll probably be thinking "how is that funny", but you just can't know without actually watching it. My wife and I were laughing out loud through almost the whole thing.
So Here Comes Dr. Tran is about a kid who, while trying to eat breakfast, is interrupted by the voice of a movie preview announcer. The announcer starts announcing upcoming movie releases starting Dr. Tran while the kid stars in confusion. Soon the kid realizes the announcer is talking about him, and so he starts denying everything the announcer is saying, and this continues on and on with the announcer's statements getting more and more absurd while the kid gets more and more pissed. It may not sound like much, but seeing it in action is simply hilarious. It's simplistic artistic and comedic style is reminiscent of South Park, but it maintains it's own unique flavor. The DVD even comes with a set of 3D glasses just for a special section of this short.
