Tinker Bell is back in an all new adventure, and seeing as how she's one of my wife's all time favorite fictional characters, of course we were going to watch it! Normally we'd just stick this kind of title on our Netflix queue, but thankfully there was no need for that because we were actually sent a review copy (sometimes having a fairly popular website has it's advantages). Now, they sent us the Blu-ray release, which would be even more awesome if we had a Blu-ray player. Luckily, a standard DVD is included with the Blu-ray, which is good thinking on their part, since even those families that do have Blu-ray players will probably want a DVD copy their kids can watch in the other room.
In the first film, we saw Tinker Bell's birth and watched as she struggled to fit in with her new community of fairies. Now she has not just found her place in the society, she is actually rather well known and liked. She has made a name for herself as a talented inventor, creating new devices out of all sorts of odds and ends which usually end up making life easier for everyone, though like any inventor, sometimes her creations don't work exactly as planned. At the beginning of this film, we introduced once again to that sexy little fairy as she is about to test one such invention.
Anyway, following the minor mishap with her new invention, Tinker Bell is summoned to meet with Queen Clarion. After initially thinking she is in trouble, she comes to learn that she has been chosen to make the new Fall Scepter for the Fall Festival, an extremely high honor, as the blue moon only shines in Pixie Hollow once every eight years and it's when that light shines through the Moon Stone held in the Fall Scepter that the fairies pixie dust is renewed. Thrilled, she sets off to work on it straight away, and finds an eager helper in her best friend and pixie dust expert, Terrence.
The film is really light-hearted and easy going up to this point, with a lot of comical moments as well as some sweet and exciting ones, but of course what kind of story would it be if things didn't take a turn for the worse, and boy does it ever. This turn of bad fortune eventually causes Tinker Bell to set off on an adventure, alone in a hot air balloon-like invention of her own creation. Her adventure is filled with perils, uncertainty, and desperation, and along the way she makes a new friend in the form of a cute little firefly named Blaze.
I won't give away the whole story, but I must confess that even though I did enjoy the first film, I enjoyed this one even more. Maybe it was the adventure, or that it had a whole roller coaster of various emotional states, or even that the animation looked better. The colors here were beautiful, and there were several very nice particle effects and water effects scenes, especially the Fairy Tale Theater scene which was amazing with the lighting and particles and everything. The whole film just looked fantastic; I can only imagine how nice it looks in high-def.
The extra features on the DVD include:
- Bonus Short: "Magical Guide To Pixie Hollow - a five-minute long tour of Pixie Hollow narrated by Tinker Bell
- Outtakes and Bloopers - 8 deleted scenes with intros by the filmmakers, and a bunch of pretty funny "outtakes"
- Backstage Disney: Pixie Hollow Comes To Walt Disney World - a cool look at the Pixie Hollow Fairy Garden at Disney World, showing it in action and how they put it all together.
- Music & More: "The Gift of a Friend" by Demi Lovato - a music video
This was a really nice, entertaining, and beautiful film that's definitely worth checking out, and if you have a Blu-ray player or are planning on getting one soon, definitely get the Blu-ray version.
