Character Description: Winged Dragon of Ra

The Winged Dragon of Ra is anything but ordinary. It is the most powerful Duel Monster in existence and comes with six abilities:

  1. Point to Point transfers all but one Life Poin to Ra's combined ATK/DEF.
  2. Immediate Attack allows Ra to attack right away after being summoned from the graveyard.
  3. Collective Monsters makes Ra's Attack and Defense equal to the ATK and DEF of the three monsters sacrificed to summon Ra.
  4. Command makes it so Ra can only be truly summoned and controlled if the person who sacrificed the three monsters also chanted a special langauge called Hieratic, which forces Ra to grant the chanter control of Ra. But there is a drawback... if your opponent chanted Hieratic first, then your opponent has the power of Ra on his side.
  5. God Phoenix allows payment of exactly 1000 Life Points to destroy one monster on the field. It also works on God cards, but the destroyed Egyptian God returns to grace the field by next turn. Once again, God cards are not affected by Magic, Trap, Monster Effects, or God effects.
  6. Sacrifical allows the sacrificing of another monster to increase Ra's Attack and Defense even more. Sacrificng an Egyptian God would boost Ra's stats, and said sacrificed God would return the next turn to be sacrificed...again.

This monster is also named after the Egyptian God, Ra, the Sun God. With golden scales and red eyes, it's a sight to see and is rarely seen at all. Its attack and defense power depends on the collective attack and defense points of the three monsters that were sacrificed to summon it.

But despite this omnipontence, Ra's terrible power can only be controlled if someone can say the incanation on the bottom of the card. The writing is a form of Egyptian that only those like Marik could decipher. Anyone else would either be placed in a comma or die a painful death.

When Maximillion Pegasus discovered the ancient Egyptian script on the card, he made sure that the writing could only be revealed when the card was in play. The chant is (from episode 192):

Great beast of the sky, please hear my cry, transform thyself from orb of light and bring me victory in this fight. Envelope the desert with your glow and cast your rage upon my foe. Unlock your powers deep within so that together we may win. Appear in this shadow game as I call your name... Winged Dragon of Ra!

Apparently, though, Atemu/Yami Yugi uses a diferent chang:

Almighty protector of the sun and sky, I beg of thee, please heed my cry. Transform thyself from orb of light and bring me victory in this fight. I beseech thee, grace our humble game. But first I shall...call out thy name, Winged Dragon of Ra!

One of it's most amazing appearances is when it was used by Yami Bakura and Marik against Yami Marik in the Battle City Finals.

Character Description: Winged Dragon of Ra

Ra appears again in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. Although the original Ra is gone, and almost all copies are either destroyed or under lock and key at Industrial Illusions, one copy is stolen by a worker, Frantz. Pegasus and Chumley Huffington recruit Jaden to win it back in a duel.

Frantz succeeds in summoning Ra in his first turn, but Pegasus protests that Ra will not obey; not only is it a counterfeit, but Frantz does not have the power to control it. Frantz laughs and plays the Field Spell "Mounds of Binding God", causing chains to erupt from the ground and ensnare Ra, forcing it to obey Frantz without him reciting the chant or having a Millennium Item.

Frantz merges with Ra, but when they are about to be destroyed, he plays De-Fusion, splitting himself from Ra, and leaving the god with 0 points while Frantz's Life Points absorb Ra's power. As Ra lies weak and helpless on the ground, Jaden asks how Frantz could do that to a god, but Frantz laughs: he not only chained Ra and forced it to do his biding, but was able to merge with it and steal its powers. Ra is no god: Frantz is.

Jaden, realizing Ra is in pain, plays the Field Spell "Skyscraper 2- Hero City", discarding the Mounds of Binding God and freeing Ra from Frantz. Although its imprisonment is over, Ra is still too weak to take advantage of its freedom. Jaden attacks and destroys it in battle, but Frantz declares that if it was too weak to live, it deserved to be destroyed. Then, Jaden activates "Necro Illusion", to revive any monster that was destroyed in battle that turn. And he chooses Ra.

Ra rises onto Jaden's field with a roar. Although Jaden, like Frantz, does not have the power to control Ra, he has no intention of doing so, he and Ra want to do the same thing: defeat Frantz. Ra, furious at Frantz for chaining it, lets Jaden use it for a turn, if only to wreak revenge. Jaden gives Ra all his Life Points to power it up, and Ra attacks Frantz to win the duel.
