Character Description: Kai Hiwatari
Kai's Bitbeast, called Dranzer, is best known for its Fire Arrow, Flame Sabre, and Blazing Gig attacks, but Dranzer also gives Kai's blade a defensive move called Spiral Survivor, which can give it an unusual spin that makes it a difficult target to attack. Kai normally plays aggressively, like Tyson, but he also has the wisdom of experience, so he also knows how to employ strategy.
Kai knows very little about his childhood, and before he became captain of the Bladebreakers he ran his own gang of bladers called the Blade Sharks. It will be a shock when he learns the truth about his early life late in the series.
Ages
In one episode of the first season, Kenny partnered Max, Tyson, Ray, and Kai according to age (episode 42, "Fortunes Dear and Dire"). This apparently showed that Max was the youngest, followed by Tyson, then Ray, and finally Kai. Hilary's exact quote is "For instance, that book says the youngest player should team up with the oldest player, that means Kai and Max should be partners".
However, the second Beyblade DVD contains character bios which state that all the Bladebreakers except for Kenny are 13 years old (if you can get a picture of this, please contact me). Why does this matter? Because I'm told that originally, Kai and Tyson were both 12, but then Tyson had a birthday and turned 13, making him older then Kai. And thus, this would create a conflict with the above stated ordering of ages.
Assuming they are both 12 to start with, if both Kai and Tyson had their birthdays sometime before or during the episodes shown on the 2nd DVD, then they could both be 13 years old as the 2nd DVD bios states.
Of course, I'm also told that Ray is the oldest among them, and Max is older then Kai, but he's also younger than Tyson. This would make Ray the oldest, followed by Tyson, then Max, and finally Kai.
So who is right? What is the proper age order? If you can provide hard evidence from official sources regarding the ages of these characters, please contact me.
Birth Date
I'm told that Kai's birthday was said to be August 2nd by the creator, Takao Aoki. I'm also told that his birthday was seen listed on other websites as November 16th 1988, November 18th, November 9th, and April 17th. I've had many fans tell me that, based on Kai's personality, they believe he is a Scorpio (which is October 23 - November 21). If you know any more about this, please contact me.
Editor's Note
I've had a lot of people tell me that Kai was the leader of the BladeBreakers for a time, and then Tyson became the leader. Why do I mention this? Because I've also had a few people tell me that Kai was never the leader of the BladeBreakers. If you are one of those people, then you are WRONG! Kai was definitely the leader of the BladeBreakers. Well, at least in regards to the US version. In the episode when Kai and Tyson battle and Tyson wins, Mr. Dickinson says to Kai, "I was thinking more along the lines of making you team captain". This is in the first season, after the Regional Tournament, and Kai accepts. And all the BladeBreakers have stated several times that Kai is the Captain. This could very well be different for the Japanese version. In fact, I had someone email me that said he thought in the Japanese version, Mr. Daitenji (Mr. Dickenson) only persuaded Kai to be in the team because of his skill as a beyblader and not to be become the team leader for BBA team (Bladebrakers).
In V-force, however, after coming back Kai does not accept his title and the team is without a captain the whole season. In G-Revolutions, he was suppose to get the captain title back but left the team.

Character Description: Kai Hiwatari
Kai is an anti-social boy who has had a very hard childhood. He is captain of the Bladebreakers, and was forced into beyblading by his grandpa, the source of all his misery. Kai is a realist and the best at everything he does. He seems to hate people, but who can blame him; compared to him most of them are intolerable idiots.
In G-Revolution, Kai is in the Blitzkrieg Boys (previously known as the Demolition Boys) for some time. And apparently, Kai was also a member of BEGA for a short time.
The most important factor that makes Kai different is his self-reliance. Unlike his other team mates, Kai knows what he wants, what to speak and when, and considering his wisdom and age one can say that he is well ahead of his time. It's a blend of his vision and strategy that has helped his team mates win most of the tournaments (again the Asian tournament and American tournament).

Kai's background story and personality is prob the best about him, and of course he is smexy as hell ¦3
But i think its the way he acts with the other bladebreakers which is the most interesting. Kai just wants to be alone and yet the others all are generally happy and get along with one another. And make the effort to get along as well as get to know more about Kai, while Kai would want for everyone to leave him the hell alone. And yet they don't. Yes they call him sour-puss and make fun of him, mainly Tyson, but they consider Kai as a friend even if Kai claims that they aren't.
The most important relationship would be kai and tyson. their friendship I think its interesting because on one side you have a happy kid, who can be hot-headed from time to time, but never lets a friend down. While on the other you have Kai, the lonsome wolf you wants to be left alone and for everyone to leave his life alone. And yet maybe due to Tyson's stubborn nature Tyson won't give up on Kai. Even after being punch in the face by Kai or threated to be hit by him Tyson always wants to help him.
their friendship is interesting in how they grew up over the seasons and how they both changed, mainly kai though. At first Kai is a **** (refer to a donkey's behind), however he does help the team when they need it most with his experience and advice to offer.
During the second season Kai's personality has changed to a much more quieter person but he stays with the bladebreakers and helps them out. Though at first he denied to come back but in the end he returned (this tends to be a common thing-kai stays, then leaves, then comes back)
the last season Kai at first is hanging around with the bladebreakers, but once he decides to leave for the blitzkerg boys, which apparently must have been quite the hard decison as he was puzzling over what to do and Tala and Kai don't exact see eye to eye, in-order to defeat Tyson.
Kai yet again leaves in order to defeat Tyson when BEGA came into the series run by Boris, which I was slightly shocked at considering Kai's and Boris' past at the abbey. But I suppose this states that Kai would do anything to go against Tyson again (why doesn't he just ask for a match I don't know.)
After experiencing defeat to a certain blader Kai goes into a confused state of mind. His sitting down dark alleyways, his eyes staring off into the distance. At one point kai is standing outside BEGA tower and is considering to go inside to help his old teammates. But ends up just walking away. Later on he vists Tala in hospital and realizes he has to do something. Kai practices with his blade and returns to Tyson and the others. Tyson welcoming him back. It seems Tyson is as easy to forgive as he is to forget.
I would say that Tyson is the only one who understands Kai. And I hope that their friendship would continue to go on (not in a gay way guys DX) When Tyson catches Kai after fight with brooklyn I think that this says alot (again not in a gay way) but like Kai falls and Tyson catches. You never see anyone really get close to Kai in the series, a tap or pat on teh shoulder maybe.
Kai is too proud to allow anyone to see him weak (see his battle against Ray in GREV, when Kai acted all tough after the match but had to lean against the wall for support) yet after his match with Brooklyn Kai was exhaust and fell but Tyson catched him, Kai didn't shove him off straight away, maybe he was too weak? but it shows that Kai is allowing or trusting Tyson (we know how Kai hates to be touched but others, right? xD) It shows how their friendship has grown through the series, and I think that's what I love most about beyblade and why I watched it. The development of the bladebreakers friendships is something I haven't seen in other animes Ive watched, and even in other shows I think no friendship ever really got to me like what the bladebreakers have.
True beyblade fan huh aren't I? xD There are mosre connections within the show that you see how they develop I wonder if the writer ever intended that....xD
Kai is a truly exceptional character but his only that exceptional because of the other characters. If kai never met Tyson he wouldn't be the Kai we know today. ... show more »
