Required: Please fill in the new birth date field

Attention:

I have added a new birth date field to the User Profile Control Panel. This field will soon be required, meaning you won't be able to do anything after you log in until you enter a valid birth date, so please enter your birth date now before that happens.

Your birth date will not be made publicly viewable. It is mainly for statistical purposes and so I can prevent young users from entering adult areas.

Nice thinking. but, hypothetically speaking, wouldn't that make users a bit more hesitant to join? here's my mind at work for this:

a new user finds AA, and want's to join;
see's the DOB field;
outcome A: Will not be bothered by it
outcome B: Will not join because it may seem suspicious
outcome C: will ask their parents for permission (as i believe you request for young users) and they become suspicious.

hate to play devils advocate, but thats kinda what i thought when i read the idea. a good one too, but, one that may have repercussions

It makes parents more suspicious when they see a subforum called "Other adult discussion" and their 10 year old son can look into that forum without any problems.

but dont forget, the adult forums are hidden unless you choose otherwise, and i am not sure how many newbies know how to do that, especially if they are young, maybe their first forum.

exactally what i was thinking. That's what i did when i was a kid. changed my birthdate to 1979 from 1989. So i was automatically 10 years older.

I don't think there is... It's mainly just some are as honest as yours truely. Oh and you can make it publicly viewable if you choose....

He has his viewable, and I've seen others have it viewable, so I'm guessing you can.
