I was watching the state legislature's special session to deal with the fiscal/monetary crisis.
For those of you who don't know, California is running almost a $30 billion deficit (debt). According to the 'money guys' (LAO, Dept. of Finance, etc..) say that the State will run out of money by March if nothing is done.

The only way out of this deficit however seems to be raising taxes, start taxing things that aren't taxed, etc...CA's unemployment rate is going up every month, and starting this month or next month, the State is freezing all of it's projects (ex: construction) and is even talking of laying off public employees.

The Governor has proposed to increase all local sales taxes to 1.5%. (That would make my sales tax 9%). It's just insane. My poor representatives are trying to figure out what taxes (if raised) would be the least damaging, and the answer is 'none' (according to LAO).

Assuming all these taxes will go up, that will mean my work might be forced to lay people off, cut hours, and if the sales tax goes up, it'll mean less business (who wants to pay a 9% sales tax? Some other counties are already at 8.0%).

It's just one big charlie fox. I'm doing my own research to see what can be done. All roads though seem to be leading to the State's tax laws (which is perplexing). And I want to leave my job if I were to be accepted in a position with the Superior Court. But if the State is going to start laying off people, I might be the first one to go, and then I'd be out of a job.

No complaining allowed because I am working a total of 5 days in my MONTH!!!!! off for Winter Break. Chicago has 10% taxes and my work is at 8%. I think. It was when I left. So I am more or less out a job, our taxes are higher than yours, and you aren't sitting here looking at streets and sidewalks that are half-ice, half asphalt.
