though the movie is suppose to be more ramantic than the tv show. the tv show gets you more into the characters than the movie due to the length

For a series: Although FMA didn't really appeal to me that much, but I have to say that Hughes' death was by far the saddest i saw.
In a Movie: Grave of the Fireflies contained one two the saddest deaths I've ever seen in any movie, not just an anime movie.
