Genesis/Peter Gabriel

Okay, this thread is just to see if there is a SINGLE OTHER PERSON on AA that listens to the music I do.

Anyway, the band's name is Genesis. They started out with the following line up:

Peter Gabriel: Lead Vocals/Flute
Tony Banks: Keyboards/Back Up Vocals
Anthony Phillips: Guitar/Back Up Vocals
Mike Rutherford: Bass/Back Up Vocals
John Silver: Drums/Back Up Vocals
David Thomas: Back Up Vocals

Their first album came out in 1969 and was pretty much a dud.

After a few more albums, their line up changed. Phillips left and Steve Hackett took his place. John Silver also left, to be replaced by Phil Collins. David Thomas also left, not replaced by anyone.

After more albums yet, Peter Gabriel left in 1974 for a solo career. Phil Collins took over as lead vocalist and had two more good albums, after which the band ceased to even be Genesis anymore. Their style of music had completely changed from Progressive Rock to pop.


Peter Gabriel's solo career led him into "World Music", which is basically music influenced by other cultures. Peter Gabriel, in my eyes, produced absolutely fantastic music before and after he left Genesis. As for Phil Collins....well....he was great up until 1980. After that....bleh.


So, the question is this: Has anyone ever heard of Genesis or Peter Gabriel? And, if any of you want a sample of their music, go ahead and PM me with your AIM/YIM/ICQ contact details and I'll send you a song or two. I always like letting people in on great music like this.

Land Of Confusion was one of their later songs, sung by Phil Collins. He was the lead singer from 1975 on. The last album they had with Peter as the lead singer was "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway", which was released in 1974. After 1980, the band ceased to impress me, as they pretty much turned to pop, and I'm really not a pop fan. But, before 1980, they were amazing. In their shows, they had astounding theatrics. Peter was ((and still is)) a lyrical genius. Plus, how many bands back then ((or now even)) had a flute player? Genesis and Jethro Tull; that's about it. Genesis has always been the most amzing and original band out there. Not to mention, they were the first band to use lasers and a double necked guitar.

As for Games Without Frontiers, yeah, Peter Gabriel is a freaking genius.

Classic rock was one of the things I was raised on, so yeah, I'm familiar with Genesis and Peter's solo stuff. There's also a radio show that airs music from 1965-1975, so I've been frequently exposed to early Genesis stuff.

That being said, I'm going to disappoint you now and say that I don't think their music is that great. BUT, Games Without Frontiers is an awesome song. A couple other favs are Biko and Solsbury Hill.

Obviously, I prefer his solo stuff over Genesis. Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is kinda trippy, but it's not really not the best classic rock that comes to mind.
