a anime movie i cant remember pls help me remmber :P

it begins with a young kid about 17 or so in the middle of no where, he decides to leave for one reason or another and takes his "old" robot with him. along the way they are ambushed by a robot army and the old robot sacrifices itself to allow the kid to escape, the kid is later found by a group of bounty hunter/scavengers and taken to live with the woman in the group.
the one bit i remember about this particular scene is that a old man that rents her the room and also buys thier scavenged parts has bugged the house with cameras to perve. bit off topic but maybe memorable.
the group originaly goes outside the city fighting and destroying enemy robots for thier computer chips to sell back in the city. after defeating a bunch of near mindless drones they take on a huge three headed snakelike robot and get three very valuable chips from it.
later the city comes under attack, the city is governed by a robot "hero" and a human ruler, the robot noted how the "boy" and his robot fought side by side just like humans and robots did in the past, the human then says something along the lines off "but now im too old and couldnt do much anyway".
the robots of the enemy are controled/ruled by a mysterious person who wants the boy or his robot im not sure.

later the boy is reunited with his robot who is then equiped with his old armor and weapons and memory, he is a ancient "hero" of the wars, and this is about all i can remember.

if anyone knows what its called pls let me know, its been bugging me for years, i last watched it around 1999 but it could very well be older.

You're not going to find it on DVD. It was released by AnimEigo on VHS back in 1993 and there doesn't seem to be a demand for a DVD of it. Lucky you should be able to find copies of the VHS dirt cheap. And you've reminded me I need to convert my own VHS copies of it to DVDs.
