Akago/Hakudoushi is Naraku's detachment, created while Naraku was undergoing his transformation into a true demon at Mount Hakurei. He is the embodiment of Naraku's human heart, however, only Onigumo's perverse-nature and immorality made the transfer, leaving the human's feelings for Kikyo in the imps within the "whole-demon" Naraku. Of all of his incarnations, Naraku treasures Hakudoushi the most, as his life depended on Hakudoushi's well being.

Akago has the power to go into the darkness of people's hearts, using his host's abilities as his own. He even momentarily possessed Kagome, as her ability to find the Shikon Jewels is useful in his mission to find the final Shikon Jewel Shard. But it ended up with Akago sliced into two. He regenerated/matured from one half and was given dominion over his new bodyguard/nanny Kagura. This is Hakudoushi. The other half (which held Naraku's heart) became an infant, who is the source of not only the very existence of Naraku, but Hakudoushi's life as well.

Hakudoushi eventually learned of his new power to read the minds of the dying, revealing that the final Shikon shard is at the gateway into the land of the dead. As a result, he goes on a killing spree to catch brief glimpses to give him clue of the gateway's location.

Editor's Note: I was told by someone that Hakudoushi is female, not male. So I asked for people to contact me if they had any evidence, and contact me you did. Apparently it is clear that Hakudoushi is male in both the anime and the manga.

When Hakudoushi was not yet Hakudoushi, he was Naraku no Akago, Naraku's... baby. The evil baby is the one who found and captured the darkness in Kagome's heart. Later on, he was split in half by a powerful monk. One half was given to Kagura, the other given to Kanna. Kagura's half became Hakudoushi, Kanna's became the baby who holds Naraku AND Hakudoushi's heart.

Hakudoushi used Kagura just like Naraku and got her to get him stuff and sent her on other missions. Later, Hakudoushi became the master of the demon horse called Entei after killing off the previous owner Rengokuki (a green, icky, salamander-like demon who asked Kagura to marry him). Hakudoushi, now possessing Rengokuki's death scythe, goes out decapitating a bunch of demons and taking home their heads to read their thoughts to see if they knew the whereabouts of the last Shikon jewel shard.

Hakudoushi has a powerful barrier just like Naraku. Hakudoushi tried to 'replace' Naraku, tried to betray him. When Naraku found out, he removed Hakudoushi's barrier which enabled Miroku to suck him into his Kazanaa, ending Hakudoushi's life.
