Kaoru is a kind, caring (albeit short-tempered), pretty girl who cannot cook. She is the heroine of the series and teaches the Kamiya Kasshin style. Her friends are very important to her, since she has no family. Her dojo is pretty much the big hangout for most of the characters. She pretty much brings in the money by giving lessons at other places. Because of this, the Kamiya Dojo is often in need of money. However, Kaoru is very optimistic, and doesn't let anything get her down.
Kaoru cares a lot about Kenshin, and several times in the series, it suggests that she loves him. She gets jealous whenever Megumi flirts with him, and worries about him whenever he goes off to fight. Whenever he leaves, you can be sure that she'll follow him. Where he is, Kaoru is somewhere close by.
Kaoru is a very sweet girl and would do anything to protect those whom she cares about. She is a good friend to have.

I've noticed that larger age gaps seem to be common in anime. For instance Usagi & Mamoru of the Sailor Moon series. So with it happening again in a series like RK here (even with it being fitting according to their time line), I'm wondering if such age gaps are acceptable in Japan/Asian countries... Sailor Moon was clearly in a modern day setting. My stance on this as an American: I would not allow my daughter to date someone 10 years ahead of them if they're still under my roof. th e 1st time i knew that kauro is 17 tottaly shock i think its much better if kauro is 19 or 21 because kenshin is 28 but i still can't belive that i think it betweens adult and young love because i think kenshin is mature....

In the 19th century age difference was common, so it doesn't really bother me.

Age is just a number. Kenshin was in his late teens while he was the Battosai and Kaoru was probably 7 or 8. My boyfriend is 10 years older than me and he's 38. As you get older age is just a number.

besides it would be weird that he was the battousai 10 years ago if he's 17 now he would be the battousai as a 7 year old?! this anime is fictional but it doesnt go beyond the borders of that...

The age difference isn't bad, and like people have said, and I'll repeat; in the time they would have lived (if they were real), the age difference was really not an issue. The bigger issue would probably be that Kaoru was 17 and not married or engaged already... that and she has 3 men (if you incl. Yahiko) living with her (since Sano often mooches). ... show more »

true they lived in the 1800's so age did amount that much as now plus kenshin looks atleast her age so it doesn't seem that weird as if in this time of year then it would be wierd

It was no uncommon for people to marry in those time periods with such an age gap. It wasn't frowned upon like it is today.

I know a lot of couples that have an age difference of 10 or more years, so this isn't very strange to me.
