Introducing Bitcoin-chan
With Japan now the biggest market for Bitcoin it is no surprise that there an anime character based upon the growing cryptocurrency. Bitcoin-chan is the star of this online comic project created to promote Bitcoin in Japan and help increase general awareness. The short, four frame comics began being produced in 2014 and the project itself has expanded to include widgets for mobile devices such as the Bitcoin-chan ClockWidget available for android devices in the Google Play store.
Bitcoin-chan, the “Fairy of Money” is described as a precocious 5-year-old (this was back in 2014 so her age matches that of Bitcoin itself) that is interested in tracking her value. Bitcoin-chan’s anime styling make her a perfect ambassador for Bitcoin in Japan and there has even been talk of a Manga being produced featuring Bitcoin-chan. Although she seems to have been very quiet since July, 2015, recent events in China (Chinese Bitcoin traders and exchanges have been asked to halt services) that have led to Japan now being the biggest Market for Bitcoin could mean that now is a perfect time for Bitcoin-chan to be brought back into the spotlight
But What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is one of the first cryptocurrencies to be released onto the worldwide market. It was created by a programmer (or group of programmers) by the name of Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009. Bitcoin uses a peer to peer system in that transactions are processed by a network of nodes and at the same time are recorded on a publicly distributed ledger known as a blockchain. Transactions are made directly between a vendor and purchaser without the need for an intermediary such as a bank, card merchant or payment service. Bitcoin is growing in popularity being accepted by giants such as Microsoft and Dell, online retailers and in some countries, such as Canada, high street retailers and restaurants. One area where Bitcoin has been incredibly successful is in iGaming leading to some online casinos only accepting Bitcoin. The casino uses Bitcoin in place of traditional currencies.
Just like the internet back in the 90s, Bitcoin is something that most of us have heard about but know little about. Not only is it relatively new but it is also growing in popularity and acceptance around the world. There is a Bitcoin Embassy in Montreal Canada, online retailers are beginning to accept Bitcoins, High street retailers are beginning to accept Bitcoins, there are Bitcoin ATMs and Bitcoins are even being mentioned in Television and movies such as in 2015s Blackhat starring Chris Hemsworth (famous for playing Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films). Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin are here to stay and their presence in our daily lives is growing day by day. We can expect that in the not too distant future that technologies such as Bitcoin could eventually replace the forms of currency that we use and are familiar with today, after all, we are already using our mobile devices to make transactions already and the Technology already exists to use mobile devices to make bitcoin transactions in the high street using QR codes.
