Among the two listed above, I'd prefer to get a Xbox 360. It has more games that I want, and the difference in power between the two does not justify the extra $200.

But if I had to pick one of three, I'd skip both and get a Wii.

You're right, its not worth $500 (or $600), considering that standard Blu-ray players go for around $1000, the PS3 should be well over $1200, but its not so PS fans should consider themselves lucky. :)

But as a game system it looks very questionable

That's the thing though, I think Sony made a huge mistake by using the unproven Blue Ray format, which is the factor that is jacking up the price of the PS3. The Xbox 360 is using the HDDVD format, which may be somewhat inferior to the Blu Ray, but the 360's format is still a great deal cheaper than the Blu Ray.

Besides, if the PS3 was over 1200, no one asides from the elite upper class would buy it.

Actually the 360 currently does not support HD DVD, it still uses DVDs. You have to buy a separate HD DVD drive for $170, which doesn't come out till November. A 360 with a 20GB HD is around $399, the HD DVD drive adds another $170, making the total price around $570. The PS3 with pretty much the same capabilities as the 360 is $70 cheaper and the 60GB PS3 is only $30 more, which has more features then the 360.

I have to give it to the folks at Microsoft, they sure now how to fool the consumer. If publishers start releasing games in HD DVD format, 360 owners will be forced into buying the HD DVD drive. Though the magnificent thing about it is if the HD DVD format fails and Blu-ray wins, then Microsoft can just release a Blu-ray drive for the 360. Sony cant do that, if Blu-ray fails then their pretty much screwed.

You need to understand as well that Nintendo was never in the next gen race as Miyamoto(sp?) had said himself. They just wanted to give the people an affordable game system that brought something new to the table. I believe they did that beautifully and with powerhouse series in Zelda and Metroid to add to the mix as well. (I'm not sure about the new Zelda but I'm pretty sure that Metroid Prime 3 is a launch title.)

IMO Microsoft WILL have a big year since very FEW parents will be able to afford the PS3 until it goes way down in price. Then I still haven't heard anything about a price cut, but I think it still might be coming. I think the PS3 will bomb until they time when the price goes down, then Sony will claw it's way back up. Both companies just happened to forget that we all don't have money like Buffett.

Gamewise I think the 360 has dibs on the better games at the moment. Bioshock, Gears of War and Too Human are on the 360 and quite frankly I'm looking forward to them. Final Fantasy bores me anymore because it's almost always the same thing only with diffrent characters. Actually all RPGs have fallen into a loop, but games like Oblivion actually make it more fun when you create character after character and see how they play.

Oh yes and Sonic will be on the 360 as well, but I gave up on that being good when I heard that they were putting Shadow in the game with guns and vehicles again....

I agree. the RPG world needs a jolt of some kind to get out of the rut that it's in.

Me, not really being a RPG girl, and with Play Station being the company with the most RPGs. It puts me off it. That and the price.

Yeah, I don't know why but the RPG world is kinda going downhill.....
I do agree that the PS3 price is kinda a turn off, but I'm still determined to buy it, but not when it comes out, maybe a few years later.

The only reason why 360 has a lot of games is because that the PS3 is still isn't released yet and the 360 has. We have to wait until it comes out on November....I think.
