How were you introduced to Anime? (discussion)
How were you introduced to Anime? (discussion)
IF you were approached on the street, and asked how you were introduced to Anime, and why it's become so ingrained within your way of life, how would you respond?
For moi;
More or less, my first introduction to Anime was the old Starblazers show when it was on EARLY Toonami (back in about 97') which in turn lead to Gundam Wing, and my centricism on Mecha and Sci-fi Anime shows. AS to why; it simply filled a void in my young life, and has become somewhat of a base for other interests later on. Heck, I will say that it's made me much more creative especially with the subsequent dabbling in RPGs. It's even responsible for my teaching myself how to type. Amazing little doo-dad Anime can be, no?
How about you AA? What's your story?

I started watching anime when I was about 6-7 years old. My friends used to play of pokemon and I wanted to play with them. But they didn't let me play, because I didn't watch pokemon. So I started to watch it. Then I watched Sailor Moon, Card Captor Sakura, YuYu Hakusho and Dragon Ball (my mom didn't let me watch this one, but I love it so I watched it without her permission. When she entered in the room, I changed the channel. XD)
After that, I didn't stop liking anime ^^

When I was a kid; 5 years old or something- my mom called me into the lounge room and said "I think there's a cartoon on you'll like!"
It was Pokemon, the 2nd episode where Pikachu and Ash first meet Team Rocket. I fell in love and my poor mother and father had to pay the price by spending $300 on pokemon merchandise the following three christmas holidays and birthdays.
Surprisingly enough, I still have all that junk - and a pokemon poster is on my wall as I type this.
After that, I grew an interest in Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh and the rest of the 'G' rated anime that was on in the mornings - and it was only in Year Seven where I realised that there was anime for an older audience out there.
I ambushed my local video game store and; mistaking a manga for a DVD long enough to buy it (God I was stupid - it WASN'T PLASTIC) - I bought Saber Marionette J and found myself opened up to a world of color and variety that I had never known before~
Sadly, Saber Marionette J was an ecchi manga - and I grew hooked on the stuff. I now have 120+ manga and half of it is ecchi, and my sister thinks I'm a sicko. >>
Bad luck for eleven year old me I guess.

Oh ho ho ho ho. This might reveal my age.
When I was in 5th grade, Teknoman was aired on UPN Kids. It was the first show I ever watched when I realized that anime was a different style... although, at the time, I still didn't know what "anime" was, because the word was not as popular as it is now. I just used to call it the "shiny eye style".
For the next couple of years, I got into anime, which was then called Japanimation. I'd squeal with delight upon finding cheap video tapes and trading cards at the flea market. And so the story goes from there.

I loved that show. Pity they had to go to college or whatever.
Now we've got "Toasted TV - with Pip 'n' Dan - who are so desperate for approval they have a wheel of misfortune segment that CONSTANTLY lands on "DOWN YOUR PANTS"
...
My childhood died when Cheese TV stopped. D= Even though all they showed as G rated 4kids stuff... and spongebob.

Well, how I got into anime is kinda interesting.
Ok, back in late 2002 I was in my grandma's kitchen and I overheard my brother and cousin talking to one another. They were talking about different series, like Trigun, Gundamn, and all of that. At the time, I had never heard of anime and I really didn't think much of it and really wasn't paying attention until they said Cowboy Bebop. I asked myself, "The hell is that? Is it about cowboy's that bebop?" I never did think to ask them about it. *rolleyes*
Fast forward to January 2003.
I had stayed up late one night and I was bored. So sometime during the 11 o' clock hour I turned to Cartoon Network. Futurama was on. I watched it because there was nothing else on.
Then midnight came, and that's when the anime started. InuYasha was the first anime series I watched that night, followed by Trigun, Bebop, and Lupin.
I've been addicted to anime ever since.
Fast forward to today.
I love Bleach and Death Note.

I didn't start liking anime until after I joined here.

Re: How were you introduced to Anime? (discussion)
My anime liking can be separated in three different moments.
In my childhood, when I was 5-6, there were a lot of anime in TV. I remember watching a lot of them (can't tell many names since I know them in italian), but then I moved and where I lived after that there were no good channels, and I had to stop watching them.
When I was 11 I moved again, and I was again in a place with cable TV, and then I could watch Ranma 1/2, Ken, City Hunter and all those awesome series... that was a blast, and I was really into them. Too bad after a year the TV changed the programs, and no more lovely anime series were on air.
This brings to the almost-actual times, almost 3 years ago, when I was in Milan in a friend's house, chatting and talking about everything. He suddendly says "I have to show you something, that's really crazy, you'll love it". He tried to show me FLCL, but he had no codec on his new PC and he had no internet at that moment, so he told me "take the DVD with you and watch it at home".
I came home, and I checked what was on that DVD: FLCL + Abenobashi magical store. I watched both of them, and my long-sleeping passion came back to life, fiery and overwhelming.
After that I started watching everything my friends gave me, to build up a minimum knowledge and know what the hell were they talking about all the time.
I did a couple of pauses (mainly because I was WoW-addicted, and I had no time to watch TV or anything else), but since then I always kept that addictive world in my mind.
I guess it's useless to say that actually I have 8 different series downloading, and a huge queue under the "to watch" folder .D
