OUTLAW STAR - one viewer's review
OUTLAW STAR - Money is always short and Gene and Jim are always deep in debt to Fred, a merchant prince with a crush on Gene. To make ends meet the Outlaw Star crew turn their hands to bounty hunting, being body guards, “race-ship” drivers, “tug-ship” drivers, treasure hunters, etc. It may not be the height of originality but then how many movies, anime or live action, are truly original these days anyway?
OS been called a “poor man’s Cowboy Bebop and in the way of production values, that is fairly true. Still, with all the swords, sorcery, starships, and pirates you can eat as well as a ships computer with all the best lines, it’s a pretty good ride.
The animation isn't the best but that doesn’t get in the way of enjoying the characters or the story, in fact, character designs are fairly unique and quite likeable. Female nudity is quite restrained until you get to the episode that the Cartoon Network didn’t air. In the 2d disc of the 3rd Volume, all the female characters get their “fan-service” moments with Aishi providing a good look at bare cat-girl breasts. Yep, they’ve got an annoying cat girl too. The levels of comedy, action and romance is presented in a manner not always found in the run of the mill anime. When OS is funny, it’s funny, not silly, and near the end there were a couple poignant scenes that made me go, “Awwwww.”
If you haven’t seen a lot of anime this is a great one to start with and if you are an old hand, this one will kinda take you back to the good old days. Outlaw Star doesn’t qualify as a “classic” but it sure is fun. On my scale of one to ten it’s a 7.5 ( 7 = Extremely enjoyable. Makes me look forward to the next episode. A series I might watch more than once.)

Stand back! This old Otaku has PMS, a broadsword, a double bladed battle ax, a flail, dagger in her teeth and a pistol in her belt.
