Personally, I prefer dubbed. Sometimes the subtitle signal isn't picked up by my DVD player (though that's probably the fault of bad DVDs).

Anywho, I prefer the effort the American studios go through matching dub to animation--which is like a jigsaw puzzle being fit together. I think that the Japanese studios don't always get the best voices for their characters, same as American studios on rare occasions, but the Japanese studios are worse because they also don't try to get the right emotion for the scene from the actors. (And given that the animation is made first, there's no excuse for that over there.)
I particularly remember the original voice for Ken Nakajima in a scene (which sounded like an angry samurai) and his American dub voice (which sounded like an embarrassed man)...and given that the scene was one to provoke embarrassment and not outrage, it seems the wrong emotion was used for the scene.
And who can forget the demure Nabeshin, even in outrageous scenes? Brett Weaver perfectly captured the over-the-top antics of the animated Nabeshin in his voice, which is always forceful and direct.

I'm not saying dub is always better (MMG's works are a great example of bad dubbing...though Right Stuf's voice choices on Assemble Insert weren't all perfect either), but I am saying it's usually better for me.

Besides, how many people can listen to Strikeman's proclamations in English and not laugh? Or IlPalazzo's arrogant deadpan? Or the cluelessness of any of Jessica Calvello's characters? You gotta give it up to the English dubbers! 8)

i'll second that motion though i havnt seen those anime. i love dubbed, i guess i havnt experienced the bad dubbs yet but i have experienced bad subbing i dont have the best sight and when the subbing is yellow even outlined its hard to read. and they go by so fast that i dont always get all of it read and by that time i have missed what is on the screen. i'll watch it subbed if i have to but its way too much work and i often cant pay attention to the voices anyways. i say thank god that the shows i have been watching were done by Funimation and dubbed well.

I would say subbed now, only because I'm studying Japanese so its like homework..............in a way.

But really I like dubbed, when its done right. But its hardly ever done right in fact, its almost always done poorly.

So I really dont know wich way to swing on this one.

There is no such thing as bad sub.
If it's bad sub it's just bad animation...

When listenning to a foreign language you can't tell the emotion expressed.

Emmisary of Despair...that's simply not true.
For the examples I cited, the original voice for Ken Nakashima was shouting--shouting!--at Miyuki & Natsumi, and he sounded angry.
Now, if you and I spoke different languages, and I started shouting at someone, and I sounded angry at that person...would you assume I was angry at the person, that I was embarrassed before the person...or would you not know what to think, since you couldn't understand what I was saying? :?

Like I said, it was the wrong emotion for the scene. Ken Nakajima was busy watching adult videos in the scene as part of evidence gathering against this on-the-run pornographer forcing young women into said videos. As Natsumi & Miyuki give their young groupie a tour of the precinct, they open the screening room...and see what Ken is watching in there.
In the original Japanese, Ken then proceeds to scream at the others at the top of his lungs. But in the English dub, Ken expresses despair at the discovery with more of a hurried explanation.
Given that Ken is a demure character, given to quieter and more intimate scenes...the English dub fit him more than the original Japanese.

Also, in the case of Nabeshin...when Watanabe asks Hyatt who she is, Nabeshin then appears on the screen. In the original Japanese, Nabeshin gives his name in a quiet soft-spoken manner--which doesn't fit a scene-stealing moment. In the English dub, Brett Weaver gives a booming "It's Nabeshin!!!"--which fits the scene better.
And those are just two examples.

I'm not saying that all dub is better than all sub; don't give me words I never said. But I am saying that when one can take the time to record the voices separately and beldn them together like the putting-together of a jigsaw puzzle, one can take the time to get the voice right for the scene.
On the other hand, if all one has is the script and few if any directions for any given scene...one has to be darn lucky to have the voice fit the scene every time.

Like I said before, not all dubs are good. Right Stuf gave one of the cops in Assemble Insert a whiny falsetto--and that disrupts the enjoyment of the video for me whenever that character speaks. (Fortunately, he has very few lines.) And MMG, with its two-person dubbing for their videos? Please! What did they do, cast the receptionist and video editor?

I've listened to videos in the original Japanese before. I've seen subbed videos. Some are okay...and some aren't.
I just prefer dubbed better because it seems to me that the American companies take more time on the dialogue than the Japanese companies.
It is a "talkie" cartoon, after all; the dialogue should be considered as important as the visuals. Otherwise, the Japanese companies would be making their own "Angel's Egg"s.

Just my opinion. Some subs are good. Some dubs are good. One should try a little of both, get the best of all of them.
(Of course, this leaves aside the idea of some of the puns and jokes in anime being composed for an English-speaking audience. For example: in Serial Experiments: Lain, Ep.4, the teen boy Lain encounters in Fantoma asks her "Are you a PK too?"
In that setting, he was asking if she was another "player-killer", or character in an MMOG who hunts other players' characters. :)
Later on in that episode, in a fit of anger, she glares at the Men in Black--and the hi-tech goggles worn by one of them explodes into pieces. It was a PK burst from Lain, showing that she is a PK...but in the sense of being a psychokinetic. :D
Now I seriously doubt that the Japanese terms for "player-killing" and "psychokinesis" have the same initials. The pun doesn't work for the Japanese...but it does for the American audience.
Then again, SEL was made primarily for an American audience...so maybe it doesn't count in this discussion.)

How do you prefer your anime? Subtitled or Dubbed?

Right Stuf is a distributor, not a dubbing company.

Right Stuf is a distributor and a dubbing company. The 2-episode anime Assemble Insert came from them. (It was from the "contact us" feature on that disc that I originally learned about Right Stuf in the first place.)
Here to help.

I have to say subbed.
Since I study japanese it helps me to hear how they pronounce the words and sometimes I hide the subs, so I can try translating on my own.
Then again I get a good work out from reading the subs too, since I'm not a native english speaker, I get double benefits from subbed anime.
I can study and have fun at the same time.

Dubbed or Subbed???

Post by Jovenitto »

Vote and explain.

I myself like the subbed anime.
It keeps the original sound and voices.
Sometimes the dubbing voices are poorly cast, not fitting perfectly with the character.
During the making of an anime movie/series all characters' voices are exactly picked to fit a singular type of character, and any deviation from it almost everytime results in loss of character depth.

And the japanese language has a characteristic pitch that no other language can reproduce, that is lost in the dubs.

Since I don't understand japanese (only a few words - baka; "love and peace" [LOL]; numbers 0-9, and some others), and I like it as original as possible, i'll go for the subs.

Now it's your turn...

I prefer a dub if it's well done. Good voice actors, accurate script. Those which the company has taken it's time to explore.
In an uncaring universe it is up to us to determine our own destinies.

I am in awe of ADV's talent pool. I used to do only subbed until I got Saiyuki. The dubbed voices are PERFECT! Needles to say, I have all 50 episodes of Gensomaden Saiyuki and the movie.

I did many letters to Geneon after they got the rights to Reload/Gunlock asking them to use the same dub actors. They did not. I bought Vol.1 and gave it an honest listen but....I have my Japanese release (all 26 episodes and I do know the Japanses cast) coming from Hong Kong any day now. I just couldn't handle the voice people Geneon used and again let them know I would not be buying from Geneon and why. Hey, I am saving huge bucks on Reload. The 1st season was 12 discs at 29.99 each.

Yeah, crack
IS cheaper.

Subbed is when an anime has the original audio (japanese voices) and what they say is translated and shown as subtitles (those letters at the bottom of the screen!!!), that you have to read becaus you don't understand japanese.

Dubbed is when they take the anime, get actors to say in another language what is said in the original audio, and overlap the original voices with the newly recorded ones. For example, an anime with english talking characters.

They all have pros and cons, so this is hat this topic is about.
Vote what you like best, and post your reasons.
Easy, ins't it?
