You know, I actually played this game, for like... 5 minutes. The system was sorta weird to me, but it was pretty fun.

Xenosaga Episode II: My thoughts so far

Post by Xeno »

I have just last week gotten to the end of Xenosaga Episode 1, therefore i finally got to plop the Episode II disc into my PS2. (I prefer to beat my games in order so as not to get spoiled by the sequels.)
Right now as I type, I am listening to the song played during the finale when our party was escaping from Proto Merkahbah. At the risk of jeopardizing your views of my manhood, I may have shed a tear or two during that scene :(

************Xenosaga Ep. 2***********************
Alright, now here we have the second part to what may be the greatest (IMO) saga of all time. This may contain a few spoilers just so you guys know. Now then, where to begin...
There were many reports in gaming magazines and such that Episode II was vastly improved upon so as not to hit the same snags as the first game. My opinion? (And this phrase may be used more than once here) "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". But, despite my previous worries, the game has impressed me. They said they were going to change the character model's so as to give them more emotion. Again, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Some of the new character models actually downgrade from the original. I'll start with those.

Shion; She looks pretty much the same until you get to the head. Someone switched her face with that of a mannequin. Personally, the first version had much more expression than the new model.

MOMO; Of all the characters, she changed the most. Who does she look like? I swear she reminds me of someone... anyway, MOMO's look is definetly the one I hate the most.

KOS-MOS; Honestly, I like the shiny hair but the rest of it has to go. She just doesn't look as 'bad@ss as she did in the original.

Now then, the rest of the character models are acceptable. Most look exactly the same, thankfully! Jr. and chaos had their looks changed only slightly, and Ziggy is hardput to find any real differences. Now I'll move on to the characterwork.

Shion; new voice actress I think. Otherwise pretty much the same old Shion, head in the clouds, oblivious to Allen. Still likes to take charge.

Kosmos; Her new voice does make her sound more 'human'. But I prefered the cold, low toned voice in episode 1. I haven't really gotten a chance to see her in action yet, but she seems to have the same robotic movements and doesn't speak unless she deems it necessary.

MOMO; New voice actress. Doesn't really sound that different, but you can still tell. Aside from the fact that I still HATE her new look... MOMO still has that aura of innocence around her.

Ziggy; Either they got a new voice actor, or the regular guy decided Ziggy should be more 'excitable'. You can tell he's starting to change his opinion about becoming a full machine, and he's starting to care more about the safety of others... like a certain other famous cyborg we know... Hasta La Vista!

chaos; DEFINETLY a diff voice actor. I really don't like the new voice. It sounds too flat. chaos is even more of a mystery in the sequel. In on of his flashback scenes, he lets a fellow soldier know that he is niether a Realian nor human.... but then what IS he?

Jr.; Same voice actor. Same annoying whine, but I love him anyway. Jr is already reminding me why he kicks ass. In one of the first scenes the party is in a vehicle being chased through the city streets by a new AGWS type and while MOMO drives, Jr is taking the attack stance firing rounds at the machines as the vehicle swerves around turns and such. Jr. rocks.

Allen; Same voice actor. Possibly even more of a klutz this time. Before the game even begins, we see Allen accidentally steps on Shion's glasses and Shion giving him a scolding look. He still has that caring demeanor though, and he does what is necessary to help his friends.

Albedo; Thank GOD they didn't change him! I love this dude! The scene where Gaignun Kukai connects minds with Albedo in an attempt to find his location is gold! The interaction between the two brothers is well done and Albedo definetly still has that 'touched in the head' feeling about him.

All other characters are pretty much the same. There's a small scene I saw with Mary, Shelley and Helmer, (the bald black dude.) where Helmer asks if Mary is still working on her comedy act and Mary in all her countrygirl glory adds that she's trying to get 'little master' as her partner! Good stuff.

All in all, minus a few bad descisions on the designers part, thyis game is worthy of the Xenosaga title. But then maybe I'm biased... what do you all think?
