Heh, a number of those are borderline female in appearance. And a lot of them appear to be just different shots of the same people.
I just took one from the gallery here, enlarged it to 100 pixels square, added some letters and a frame I made in MS Paint (custom without a font), then animated it using The GIMP. Of course, I created it for another forum, so I had to shrink it again to fit the maximum dimension requirement but I think it turned out pretty decent. :p
Edit: A good male avatar is Orichimaru IMO. Don't even know what anime this is from just that I used to use it as my avatar. Kenshin, Legato, and Vash are also pretty good. I get a lot of good male and female avatars from people that use them on the IGN VN forums, heh.

Please DO NOT hot-link off of that website (http://www.mad-sky.com). It causes a security warning box to pop up saying that someone is stealing their bandwidth. If you must, save and upload the image to Image Shack (currently down) or Photobucket.

Now I could get really Creative with an avatar if I knew how to get frm your comp to the site(do I just put it's location Example:C:programfls/mydocuments)Anyway I was going to Put the actual LaughingMan,You know with the spining words.....I need to downl;oad GIMP I have it At my school but never got into it

Heh, from my computer to the site? Direct linking to someone's local computer files doesn't work — Well, it'll work for that file's owner but everyone else will get a broken-image placeholder instead of the avatar. If the four avatars I posted above didn't work though that's because they're hosted by Image Shack which was temporarily down yesterday.
Just so you know, local linking is done by using...
file:///C:\Documents%20and%20Settings\Owner\My%20Documents
...for Windows XP. Basically, you substitute file:/// for the http:// protocol and %20 for all of the spaces. You'd also have to substitute "Owner" for your desktop username, of course. It's only useful when linking local files on your hard drive that you only intend to view on your own computer.
As for The GIMP, it's hard to get into because it's harder to use than something like the $600 Adobe Photoshop. But hey, it's the highest quality free and unlimited use image utility I've seen to date.
