Spirit Warrior – the 5 disc series. It could have been so good. How can you blow it when you are working with Light and Dark energies (Yin/Yang), Tantric mysticism, Buddhist deities and demons, charkas, mantras, mandalas and the power of Chi? Well, the creators of Spirit Warrior, a.k.a Peacock King, did so by finding a comfortable level of mediocrity and wallowing in it for five 50 min (approx.) OAV’s.
There are some fair action sequences and the animation, given its age, is pretty good but I still had a hard time giving the show my full attention. The pacing seemed off, each formulaic plot progressed in a way that let you pretty well anticipate the resolution, and most of all I was never able to connected with the characters. Even the monsters de jour were pretty run of the mill.
Of the five disc, I found the last one the best. Others note it as being the weakest of a weak lot.
It isn’t a bad series and I wouldn’t call it a waste of time or money. It’s just that there is just so much more Anime worthy of a slot ahead of it in your rental queue. Oh, yeah. Parents note that there’s blood, gore, female nudity and in disc 5, sexual situations. On my scale of one to ten, it’s a five. (5 = Worth the time if it’s the only disc you have on hand that you haven’t already seen.)
