Well SF tried. Mayor Newsom really tried and is an interesting mayor. He's the youngest mayor in 150 years.

hope that link works. Unfortunately, our state legislature shot it down but people still get "married" in SF. I think (IMHO) that he (Newsom should have waited until after Nov presidential election to pull the approval thing)
The sad thing is pretty much the religious right in our country jumped on it and made it a presidential issue..sad really. There were/are so many other more important issues than whether two people want to legally commit to each other. At least on a national level anyway.
Note: I'm straight but not narrow. I feel it's more of a crime to deny people in long term relationships the right to medical decisions, health care benefits(domestic partner coverage), and tax benefits based on an ancient religious tradition.
