What is the point of the buddy List thing? Does it really do anything or is it just a way to show that you want to be friends with someone

The purpose is that you see the users in your list when they are online even if they are invisible. And below the "Registered Users:" at the bottom of the forum there is a "Buddies online:". There you can see your buddies ;)
