A good anime needs a deep storyline, a storyline that goes beyond the world of the anime and into something the viewer can relate in realitic way. The anime needs memorable characters than make you cry, make you happy, make you feel their emotions as they experiece them. The anime leaves you wanting more and wanting more of an explanation. A simple samurai anime that is good should have a storyline theme evolve from the quest of a samurai to something far more universal and realistic.
Examples of true anime masterpieces include Neon Genesis Evangelion, the Samurai X films, Akira, Rurouni Kenshin, and all of Hayao Miyazaki's work. Miyazaki-Sama's works are true masterpieces.
