Language Talk
Re: Language Talk
So... the Portuguese in Brazil is a certain dialect?
Then the dialect spoken in Portugal itself, that's considered standard?
What other countries speak the standard Portuguese?

Re: Language Talk
Well. . .I'd almost compare Brazilian Portugese to Portugal Porgtugese to American English being different from British English. I'm not sure if that's right though.

Re: Language Talk
Karin if you want ot learn portuguese me and my cuz would b glad to help.
And no, afrikaans does not derive from german, read what wrote.
As for portuguese and brazilian portuguese, it's like comparing american english with australian english (and still not enough to show the grammar differences).
Potuguese in Portugal is the standart language, in Brazil they speak a version that evolved slightly different (still has the more arcaic traits but also adopted some foreign traits). Brazilians may have some trouble understand the portuguese in a grammar issue or two but the portuguese will always understand the brazilians perfectly.
Other countries that speak portuguese (remenants from the old colonies) are Angola and Mozambique (Africa) with their own slight native mixes, Timor (close to Indonesia), Macau (a city in in China, though mandarin and cantonese or the native languages), some Indian provinces still use portuguese (Goa and Calcuta for example), etc....

Sorry Karin, don't fell left out!
You know German o.o mmmm I think it's a hard one mmmm I know about 4 words in that language
I just know Portuguese, some Spanish (every Portuguese can), some French (we have no choice to learn it), English (we have no choice here to) and I'm learning Japanese thanks to a certain person *cough*Tenshi*cough*

Re: Language Talk
So you have to learn both French and English? No choice? Damn, wish I lived there! You also know some spanish! Here, at my school, we have a choice of german, french, or spanish, there's not enough room in your schedule for all 3. so wtf?

Re: Language Talk
In my time you had a choice between French and English in the fifth grade (most of the times the school picked for us because of the teachers they had), in the seventh grade we have both of them and no choice at all, in the tenth it's your choice until the 11th. Now kids start learning English from 3rd no matter what!!
The are some schools now that have Spanish too, but there isn't many teachers yet, and it's easy for us to know, it has the same basis, as Tenshi was saying, it's easy for us to learn languages based on Latin.
Here in Portugal I would say that 30/40% of the anime is dubbed in Portuguese, 10% is Japanese or English and the rest of it is all in Spanish, so people is very used to it. Though there are subs we don't really need them most of the time.
