What is the Saddest Anime you have ever seen?
One of the great things about anime is its huge coverage of emotions. Some series get you angry, some make you laugh hysterically, and others just make you burst into tears. I have spent a great deal of time talking about the many emotions that anime seems to get us to feel but now I want to know what series, for anyone personally, just made your heart break. I know it may be a hard confession for some but remember we're all friends here and discussion is always healthy. Just to get the ball rolling I will start us off.

There is only one series that actually made shed a few tears and that was none other than Elfen Lied. The story along with excellent musical accompaniment is enough to melt through just about anyone.

The only anime I recall making me cry is Now and Then, Here and There. =3

Samurai X: Reflection (Rurouni Kenshin)
The tragic fate of Kenshin and with the well done music and scenes it's probably the most heartrending anime scene I've seen. The fate of Tomoe in Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal (Rurouni Kenshin) is a close second.

I first started to be teary-eyed when I had watched Outlaw Star and its ending theme. I knew by the time I heard it, I knew I wasn't gonna hear it again, then I shed tears. Later on, I felt really sad when I watched Mahoromatic to the very end. Then I cried about the ending result.
I'm still teary-eyed about both.

Anime is a way of life. But so is Reality and it hits harder.

You were sad because of the ending theme or because you'd never get a chance to hear it again for some reason?
I own Outlaw Star Perfect Collection on DVD and the only sad part was that the series ended, heh. I liked it so much too.

Well technically, Kenshin died before Kaoru did. Unless you are talking about Tomoe, I don't know Kenshin OVAs english names, I only remember the japanese names (It has been several years since I saw the OVAs).
In my opinion, Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket is by far the most poignant and horrific anime I have ever seen. Al's transformation from a boy obssessed with weaponry and mechs to a empty soul, scarred by death and the horrors of war was portrayed realistically and shockingly. Do not let the name Gundam fool you, Mech battles are not the emphasis in this series, most of the time is spent building up the characters, getting to know them better and emphatizing with them, all so that the final conclusion shocks and horrifies viewers even more. I wholeheartedly recommend this 6 episode OVA. Do not expect some "ZOMG pwnage wit my spam attak nd aimbot 2.0!!!111oneone" Anime like Gundam Wing or Gundam Seed, Do not expect a clash of big robots, do not expect stupid action. Watch this OVA knowing that 0080 is a series meant to portray the fact that war is HELL, by showing you war through the eyes of a child.
(Oh yes, Grave of the Fireflies was also a very moving movie. Not as moving as 0080, but still pretty moving.)

Yes, I was talking about Tomoe. Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal is the 4 episode "movie" that serves as a prequel to the Rurouni Kenshin series. Kaoru is the one featured in Samurai X: Reflection where Kenshin died. I don't recall Kaoru dying.Zengar Zonbolt wrote:Well technically, Kenshin died before Kaoru did. It'd be Now and Then, Here and There for me. It actually made me cry. Grave of the Fireflies was sad too but I didn't cry for that one.
