Well, I don't think that's so. I don't think anyone ever truly realizes who Vash is. But by the end of the story, it doesn't really matter anymore (I won't tell you why, though).

They figured out who he was in episode 5..didn't they? When he fourght those "Nebraska" people?

The girls find out he's the infamous "Humanoid Typhoon" in episode 5, though Milly seems to believe it as early as episode 2.

Apart from that, the girls don't know more about him. They don't know all of his history, and (like I said) by the end of the series, it becomes irrelevant.

Yes, Vash does leave after episode 25. What you don't see on TV is the ending of episode 26. He comes back.

looks like I have to step in:

you are all only partially right

when they find out he is vash on ep. 5, meryl has a VERY hard time believing it

the COMIC series trigun ends with him walking away

then starts trigun maximum(comic)

the show ends on episode 26"under the sky so blue"
vash FINALLY confronts knives
they have a gunfight
some cool stuff(angel arms at 100%)
i recommend you see it.
