Has anyone seen New Getter Robo?
Has anyone seen New Getter Robo? I just bought the first DVD and i must say that I'm quite impressed with this OVA. It restarts the origin of the Getter Robo series, and manages to do it quite nicely (and adding a darker and more ominous feel as well). I thought it was much better than the other Getter Robo OVA I saw, Shin Getter Robo: Armageddon. (I still haven't gotten around to watching Shin Getter Robo VS Neo Getter Robo)

I've only seen Getter Robo G (AKA Starvengers from Force Five) in my youth. One of the first anime I saw. Want to check out Armageddon.

I thought so. not a lot of people have heard of this title. Quaker, I advise you to stay away from Armageddon if you are concerned about plot. I loved it, and it has some great action scenes, but the storyline is really jumbled and messed up (due to the director changing midway through). Anyways, New Getter Robo is an OVA retelling of the original Getter Robo anime from the 70s. I'm rather fond of 70s super robot shows (Mazinger Z, Daimos, Voltes V, etc...) so I try to pick up any remakes and ovas (e.g. Mazinkaiser, Getter Armadeddon) Here's part of an editorial from Amazon.com
The 2004 OAV New Getter Robo brings back the durable mecha franchise created by Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa in 1974-75. Earth is being attacked by oni ("demons" in Japanese folklore) that may also be aliens. Professor Saotome, who makes Commander Ikari in Evangelion look like Mr. Rogers, has created three vehicles that link to form the redoubtable mecha of the title. ("Getter" comes from getta, "combine" in Japanese.) He needs three pilots who can withstand the strain of guiding these powerful machines: thuggish martial artist Ryoma, screeching fanatic Hayato and none-too-bright monk Benkei.
anyways, I think the only ones who have heard of this series are those who watched the original Getter robo. I advise fans of old school super robot anime to rent or buy this ova.
