RahXephon - one viewer's review

RahXephon – A new classic. Although it shares surface similarities with Evangelon it is by no means a clone. It takes off like a generic teenager-who-is-the-only-pilot-for-a-mystic-mecha but quickly makes a 180 turn that plunges you into a unique, character driven story with a deep and textured plot. This is a “thinking person’s Mecha.” Subtleties and clues abound. I marathoned discs 1 thru 4 and then watched them again only to discover numerous, “Ah, hah’s “ missed the first time. You never know just which off hand comment will be integral to the over all plot. Everything is for a reason.

No character is truly secondary and each has a real personality. You are sure to become attached to at least one of them from the manipulative professor to the tough as nails female fighter pilot to cute Major So and so on.

Although a deep and highly dramatic piece, there are moments of well handled humor. One of my favorite scenes involved an insistent kitten and a cat hating Commanding officer.

This one is a ten on my list. 10 = The visuals are true works of art and the story and characters spark the imagination between episodes; a classic to be watched again and again. A series I will buy.

Hey nice review dark lily. It's quite hard to understand if your new to mecha series, I have to admit I had trouble understanding the whole plot in the first few episodes. It's really an interesting anime'. It was helmed by Yutaka Izubuchi and I heard he worked on Evangelion too, so there really is a few similarities.Yes, the characters were molded perfectly, they were all so interesting.
