Angel's Egg is a 1985 art film directed by Mamoru Oshii, with character and visual design by Yoshitaka Amano of Final Fantasy fame, and one of the most singular works in the history of anime. In a desolate, half-flooded gothic landscape, a young girl wanders empty streets clutching a large egg she carefully shelters beneath her dress. She encounters a wandering soldier, a quiet boy carrying a cross-shaped weapon, and a tense, fragile companionship develops between them as they drift through ruined cities haunted by the shadows of ancient fishermen forever hunting drifting eidolons across submerged plazas.

Almost wordless, built on Amano's painterly imagery and Oshii's symbolic visual language, the film plays less as a narrative than as a meditation on faith, loss, and the fragility of belief. It baffled audiences on release and effectively stalled Oshii's directing career for years, but its reputation steadily grew, and it is now widely regarded as a foundational text of art-house anime. A 4K restoration in the mid-2020s brought the film back to theaters around the world and introduced it to a new generation of viewers.

A touchstone for Oshii's later work, including Ghost in the Shell, Angel's Egg remains an essential and divisive piece of animation history that rewards patient, attentive viewing.
