Anime still looks like drawings, but how those drawings become episodes has changed a lot. Computers are now involved in nearly every production stage. They help with coloring, backgrounds, editing, and visual effects. It's part of a much wider change in digital entertainment. Whether someone spends an evening streaming a new series, playing a mobile game or browsing an entertainment platform such as Hellspin, there is usually a surprising amount of technology working behind what appears on the screen. Anime is no exception.
Drawing Went Digital
For decades, anime production depended heavily on paper and physical animation cels. Artists drew frames by hand, and the process of turning those drawings into moving scenes involved plenty of manual work.
Drawing itself hasn't disappeared. Artists still create characters, expressions, and movements. However, tablets and animation software are now common tools in their work. You can fix mistakes without restarting the whole drawing. Also, files can be shared more easily among team members.
That doesn't necessarily make animation quick. A complicated scene still takes skill and time. Digital tools mostly change how that work is handled.
Colouring Became Much Easier to Manage
Colour is one area where the difference between older and modern production is particularly noticeable.
Traditional cel animation required physical sheets to be painted. Digital colouring allows artists to work directly with scanned or digitally created drawings instead. Colours can be adjusted, copied and kept consistent across a large number of frames.
It also gives studios more freedom with lighting. A night scene can have subtle changes in colour and atmosphere that would have been far more awkward to manage with older methods.
The audience may never think about any of this. They simply notice that a scene looks good.
CGI Found Its Place in Anime
Computer-generated imagery has probably been one of the more controversial changes.
CGI can help with things that are difficult or extremely time-consuming to animate repeatedly by hand. Vehicles, crowds, complicated machinery and moving backgrounds are obvious examples. Some productions blend 3D elements with traditional-looking 2D characters, while others use CGI much more heavily.
The results aren't always popular. Viewers tend to notice when 3D animation doesn't fit comfortably with the rest of a scene.
When the combination works, though, most people aren't thinking about which technique was used. They're paying attention to the story.
Anime Still Depends on Artists
With all the discussion around software, CGI and newer AI-based tools, it can be tempting to imagine anime becoming increasingly automated.
That misses much of what makes animation work. Technology can speed up certain repetitive jobs, help organise production and give artists techniques they didn't have before. It can't replace the creative decisions behind a memorable expression, an unusual camera angle or a scene that stays with viewers years later.
Anime production will almost certainly keep changing as new tools arrive. It always has. The interesting part is that the technology tends to disappear into the finished work. Fans don't usually remember which software created a scene. They remember how that scene made them feel.
