Our obsession with all things anime has led us to delve deeper, and compile our very own top 5 list. It highlights the anime series and films that dazzled us with their narrative swag and visual flair.
While many popular fan favorites did not make the cut, the below list serves as a shoutout to those shows and movies that might not be considered mainstream. Nevertheless, they still have a lot going for them.
#5 Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean
Seeing out the year with a festive helping of aura aura aura we have the long-awaited next chapter in the Joestar bloodline's increasingly crazy exploits. Taking her father's place in the spotlight, Jolyne Cujoh not only stands tall as the first female jojo but kicked off her solo series in style. Falsely imprisoned, it falls to Jolene and her new band of prison buddies to break out and bring the conspiracy behind her incarceration to light. Between all the new stands and ever increasing list of waifus, we can't wait to see what heights Jolyne and Stone 3 will reach.
#4 To Your Eternity
This show is a meditation on the various aspects of humanity, set in a fantasy world ripe with danger and ugliness, Penned by the author of a silent voice, is it any wonder this made so many weep in the very first episode alone? Fushi’s transformation from a sentient orb to a wolf, to eventually becoming a human boy, made for an enchanting viewing experience and a heartbreaking one. He must first contend with the obscenity of the knockers as they endeavored to steal away his power. At the same time, he must also come to grips with the frailty of mortality as each of his newfound friends and loved ones enter and exit his immortal life.
#3 Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song
Blending tense sci-fi shenanigans with the intrinsic nature of music, Vivi's mission to avoid a future where mankind is wiped out by an onslaught of corrupted AI is a thrill ride from start to finish. It is one that didn't only offer some amazing songs but some unexpectedly frantic and fluid action. Even if some elements of the singularity project plotline can come across a little off-key, the bond and banter between Vivi and Matsumoto is delightful. In fact, it's worth watching just to see how their companionship evolves.
#2 Kaiji
A genius, old-school anime, Kaiji itself has a simple story, about a thief whose life changes when he is visited by a debt collector. Hoping to find money to pay off the huge loan, he finds there is one way to solve his dilemma - through gambling, of course. There are so many things that make Kaiji so attractive but one of them is the game that must play to pay his loan. Fukumoto (the show’s creator) turns a simple game like Jankenpon into a clever, psychological test. The lead character is at once a hero and a loser as the protagonist of the series and it’s his complex personality that makes the show so extremely watchable. If you enjoyed Kaiji’s central theme, we recommend checking out similar games that you can play online in South Africa for free or for real money, including popular anime slots like Moon Princess and Sakura Fortune. You can find thorough reviews of each operator along with the variety of games they offer and their great bonuses to boost your bankroll right off the bat.
#1 That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
Season two of this show cemented itself among the upper echelons of the isekai genre. Rimeru's continuing adventures not only brought us plenty more explosive fights but also dared to venture into darker territory. The sequel season explores that even as a borderline unstoppable slime monster, Rimuru isn't above consequences. He props up a nation full of monsters in a world where prejudice and human greed rules, leading to some dire consequences. It may all have been worth it, however, when you consider the amazing clashes that we get to enjoy to watch. .
So, there you have it folks. Feel free to let us know if we’ve left anything out of this list in the comments below!
