Why Yami Sukehiro of the Black Bulls is the perfect 'tough but fair' character Posted Feb 2, 2022
There are so many layers to anime and manga, and so many characters to delve into – the good, the evil, and everything in between. We think that Yami Sukehiro is actually the ultimate “tough but fair” character.
What do we mean by this? Well, while you wouldn’t mess with him (or any of the Black Bulls!) he is not a villain or someone lacking in morals, and actually, a lot of his actions show what a fair character he is. A man of honor and principles, though he may not be perfect in a lot of other ways.
Who is Yami Sukehiro?
Yami Sukehiro is one of the deuteragonists and is the captain of the Black Bull squad. He used to be a part of the Grey Deers, now known as the Aqua Deers. Sukehiro is known as being one of the funniest characters in the Clover Kingdom, and one of the mightiest warriors.
The subtitled, Japanese version of the series has him voiced by Junichi Suwabe, who you may know from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind.
So, what are the reasons we have dubbed him a firm but fair character?
It is fair to say that he is something of an antihero character, and the more you delve into the layers, the more you realize exactly what the makeup of the Black Bulls’ hero is really like.
He’s known to be a bit rash and even angry at times, but he gives everyone a fair chance, without being willing to take any trash talk from anyone. This magic knight spotted and recognized Asta, and Asta’s strengths when the other captains had written him off.
Yami is not to be messed with. He’s not afraid to take risks (he has a love for casinos and in real life, you may see him playing at Betsson casino) and he is also known as being a bit of a hothead. He’s never one to shy away from a confrontation and he is certainly intimidating.
Yami saved the Clover Kingdom
Proof that he is fair, he was willing to do the honorable thing and take down Zagred. In doing so, he saved the kingdom.
The Elf Reincarnation story arc ended with this showdown, with Magic Knights (well, those who had survived) taking on the demon Zagred. He had been locked away for decades and used the reincarnation magic to break through to the human world we know, and to attack the Clover Kingdom.
Yami used his Dark Cloaked Dimension Slash to save the world from annihilation, proving his worth as a tough but fair character.
Yami was the one to stop Licht
This is a battle that bosses get to see and it is really impressive in terms of skill. Yami faces Licht, who is the elven character who once killed the Wizard King. This is a stunning showdown and Yami senses the elf’s magic. Yami has dark magic, and Licht’s light magic does not have the power to contain him.
This battle is one that shows his incredible levels of strength and power.
Yami showed honor to keep Julius’ body safe
This fight involved Yami, Marx and Owen, following Julius Novachrono’s crushing loss. Licht (mentioned above) used light magic and managed to defeat the Wizard King. Yami had to step in, and even took out reincarnated elves in the process.
The kingdom was being taken over by the elves, but the Magic Knights were willing to stay and fight. Unfortunately, most were overwhelmed as the elves have such a strong way with light magic, but Yami knew he had to protect Julius.
Yami’s honor is clear to see in this enthralling sequence, proof that he is fair and has a strong sense of morals and what is right and wrong.
Conclusion
On top of all of this, Yami is really funny. His angry nature along with his enchanting personality make him great entertainment value, so we love the rundowns of his very best funny moments, too. He’s definitely one of the more amusing characters to enjoy, and we always love the episodes that focus on him.
With a character like Yami Sukehiro, it is hard to know where they stand in the blurred lines between good and evil. The truth is that he is somewhere in the middle, and the “tough but fair” explanation of Sukehiro is one of the very best ways to describe him.
