Re: Language Talk
Yea...I figured it was a long time ago XD December isn't too awfully long ago though.
I'd LOVE to learn Russian too!!
I'd LOVE to learn Russian too!!
Re: Language Talk
Haha, I forgot about this thread so I've missed out on some posts, I see.
I had a friend in college who had taught himself some Russian. It's on a long list of languages I want to learn. I love the alphabet for it... (because I'm weird). You should listen to some TaTu sometime, they make Russian pop music.
Anyway, whoever wants to start teaching Portuguese, maybe you can start up a thread so we can all learn? And all of you can teach us? Since there's a lot of you guys who know the language. ^^
I think any of the Latin languages make it easy to learn other Latin languages, though. Because English has a lot of similar roots to Spanish, French, and German. I liked learning Spanish and found it to be relatively easy (although I've forgotten a lot of it, and I quit before really becoming fluent). But from knowing it, I can almost make out what you guys are saying in Portuguese sometimes.
Up here at our schools, you start learning foreign languages in 6th grade. They gave us an overview class, actually, where we learned the basics of Spanish, French, and German, and then you chose which one you wanted to go into after that. Of course, it was kind of stupid, because they didn't start an actual German program until I was in 11th grade, or else I probably would have chosen that instead of Spanish. >3 It's like they teased us into thinking we could pick German.
But I do think America values education, however, our society puts a lot of pressure on having money and talent. So it becomes an unfortunate situation where the best education is for the rich and talented, which causes a lot of societal dissent. Kids who are poor, or kids who aren't the BEST among their peers, start to feel left out or worthless. I know many individual teachers try to change this and encourage every student, but it's really just a problem in our society, that everyone thinks they must be rich and famous to "be" somebody - to be important.
Err, anyway... I do think education is valued here. But it's become distorted, as I was trying to say. But back to our original discussion, I think it's a shame that we don't learn languages at younger ages, either. The earlier you begin to learn things, the more it sticks with you, which would be immensely useful for kids today, once they grow up.

Re: Language Talk
I agree on the learning languages at a younger age and the educational process does seem distorted. I mean, "they" encourage you to learn and take harder classes but if it's beyond what you're capable of then you don't get good grades and colleges look down on that then...(I know several people who've had this problem)

Re: Language Talk
I agree with that, about the age for starting, though here in Portugal it's becoming a little problem, because the kids are too small, teachers complain that it's difficult for they to remember anything from class to class, I started at 10 they now star at 8 so... Anyway I think the age it’s important. My younger cousins come to me every week saying the grades of the English class, they’re so sweet
About learning Portuguese, I'm working hard for school but there will always be a time to come here and put some posts, so you can count on me. For dose who learned Spanish it's easier, because there are both Latin based languages, and as I mentioned before they are similar in some stuff. Spanish makes me remember the Brazilian Portuguese, it has similarities with the old old Portuguese, that's why it's easier, but anyway Portuguese it’s a very complex language.

Re: Language Talk
Russian is a very cool language, I like it (oh and Dreams, I love TATU too!!!)
I do agree that the younger we start learning a language, the better it is. I, for example, find it a bit less harder to learn languages because I grew up learning three. however I can no longer remember afrikaans because I don't use it, but english and portuguese come naturally to me. By the age of 2 and 3 I spoke both fluently while people today take several years to learn a language. Basically the younger you are the easier it is for you developing brain to retain information.
For example, it has been proven scientifically that babies up six months old can understand the differences between 700 languages or more!!!
Mm...Making a portuguese language forum sounds like a brilliant idea to me. I not a very good teacher myself (specially when it comes to teaching grammar) but I guess I could help out if Anny and other people help.

I like TATU too ^^
My friend had a russian song of them in her Ipod, I was always listening to the song , but she's living in Hong Kong XD
I found a russian dictionary in a bookstore a few months ago, I started reading it, but I forgot what I read XDD
It's a pretty interesting idea to do a portuguese forum.. I could try to help/teach something XD I'm not good on teaching, but I could try XD

Re: Language Talk
I'll have to look into this band!
Well, with the Tenshi clan and Rin we could probably learn a little bit of both, Brazilian and regular Portugese.
Yea, Tenshi, you're right about the language thing and being younger. That's why I'm so pissed that we don't get to study languages at a younger age than 14, when I started studying German, and 15 when I started studying Japanese.
I don't know much Spanish though...
But yea, I'm hoping to raise my kids to learn both Japanese and English, possibly German and my husband better know at least one other language! (seriously!!)

I hope I can teach my kids too some day and i also wish my husband would know English at the very very least... though that looks kind of hard to find.... oh well, I'll just end up single XD
Yesterday Tenshi went to see some forums to see the best one for us. We have been talking about the best way to teach, and we though of using the same strategies as when we learned English. But of course we are opened to suggestions.
I hope I can teach you well.... though I just teach one boy before and through the msn, and as he is from some place very far in the USA there were 6 hours of difference from here, so it's rare I meet him. I think he is in aa too, I must tell him about the forum
