The Big Blue Monster or AKA My boat

Post by Grell »

So, my family has owned this car (an '89-'90 Buick LaSabre, dark blue) since about 2000. It is the only car I really remember because we've had it the longest, and its a great car. Sure, the body's rusted to hell... and that engine light is always on, but its a good car! I loved that car to no end.

Well, in January of '08 when we were finishing moving into our new house, I had a collision... with a parked U-Haul. Now, I believe it was one of the $30 dollar ones because it was massive. But that's beside the point. It was blizzarding out, see, and I took a turn to fast, and slippery roads = loss of traction. My back end began to swerve up to meet my front end, and I corrected too fast. We were straight for two seconds before my car went WHOOSH. Up on the curb, and the next thing I was staring at was a U-Haul.

We weren't going very fast, so I backed up, saw NO DAMAGE on the U-Haul (damn tanks) and drove away. Yeah, yeah, hit and run, but the only damage was to my car. We ended up pulling over (I had a friend with me at the time and only my learner's permit) and lo and behold, my front right headlight was gone. The hood was fine. My bumper was fine. But the right side of the grill over? Gone. Obliterated by the U-Haul tank.

Well, my mom got a new PT Cruiser, because the Buick was going to be my car. We dropped it off at the auto place, and there it sat for six months. They couldn't find a replacement headlight, and then they lost my other one. So in the end, I had no headlights (incidently, the battery ended up dying from sitting there for that long).

My mom tried to entertain me with the idea of picking out a new car. I looked at the cars, looked to the corner of the lot where my buick sat, and began to cry. I loved that car so much, my mom agreed to have a friend of the family's fix it.

And he did. A new grill, new lights, and my baby looked... well, she worked. I was driving her after I got my license in August. (Probably nobody saw anything in the blizzard, else I'd be in some deep trouble.)

Well, come March, and suddenly my gas gauge isn't working. I was able to guess how much I had, but it kept being stupid. It fixed itself near the end of the month, and sometime into April, my spedometer stopped working all together. Well, that was fine, I'm a good driver, I can judge my speed from the cars around me.

But on tuesday, me and my friends noticed it. It was the beginning of the end...

My blinkers had stopped blinking.

Now, they came on alrighty, but they just didn't blink. My boss at work checked my fuses, they looked fine. And I told my mom.

Before I get to what happened with my mom, let me list off what's wrong with my car:
I've had a jack go through my car's body when I had a flat, because the whole body is so rusted
The blinkers don't work
The service engine light is always on
The backseat windows don't roll down. Incidently, they don't roll up either, because one of them is stuck.
The spedometer doesn't work
There is a crack in my windshield wiper fluid tank, so I never have fluid in it.
And the engine has begun to make a chugging noise.
I need new brakes
And new tires

Well, I talked with my mom about it, and she mentioned possibly getting a loan and buying me a new car. I expected this response, and being semi-reasonable, expected it to happen. But for all the love I have for that car, I hoped we would be able to fix it. Unfortunately, as much as I love that car, I'm also a pessimist.

My mom said that we'd take it in and have an estimate done on how much needed to be fixed.

That was yesterday.

Today, she came into my room, and told me that she'd pick the loan up tomorrow afternoon and we'd go after school to pick out a new car.

I was devastated.

She said that my dad said it was probably the engine and that we didn't have the money to replace it. And I knew that even if we did, the car wasn't going to last more than a year or so anyways with how much needed to be worked on.

So I have resigned myself to my car's fate... But I effin love that car. I'm so sad...

 I love my car. I'm going to take twenty pictures of it while me and my friends clean it out tonight...

Because it wasn't just my car, it was our car, and we've had a lot of good times in it...

Going downtown, techno blaring as we pass the hobos that live there... opening the doors in the middle of summer and cooking alive from the heat... taking road trips and running all around town just to stop at twenty different stores...

I got it mixed up with another Buick than I seen. But still, almost a 20 gal. tank? I'd cost about $45 to fill here.
