The image is small but you'll be able to read the writing in the red box i put in. It simpy says a guest is viewing private messages.

On the forum index page it says that there were 3 hidden, 6 guest, something members.

In the picture I have a number of members and 6 guests. So the hidden people aren't shown as guests.otherwise there would be 9.

Can guests view private messages?
what piece of the puzzle am I missing that makes me think either guests can view private messages or something has gone a little wrong?

I'm just a little curious that's all.

I have seen that before as well. But, I assumed it was just someone who is registered, who hasn't logged in to the site, but is logged into their private message account.

My guess would be that it was just a search engine spider.
