Well, there isn't a whole lot of anime to talk about prior to 1980. The most notable are Gatchaman and the series inspired by Leiji Matsumoto, namely Space Battleship Yamato, Galaxy Express 999, and Space Pirate Captain Harlock. There's also Lupin the 3rd, the classic action comedy. Oh yes, and the original Cutey Honey.

I have to say, there are quite a lot of space type animes around in the 70's.

It probably came naturally following the rush of the US-Soviet space race. Everyone was looking to the stars then. Part of this also is because space seemed to be Matsumoto's forte (most if not all his memorables are space-themed), and the 70's was his heyday.

Well...Matsumoto was probably the most notable artist of the 70's, but there was also the infamous Go Nagai (Devil Man, Cutey Honey) as well as Monkey Punch (Lupin the 3rd).
